Chapter 62 - Her Alibi

When Renz asked her if they could talk, Selene knew that he would be talking about what happened between them last night on the hotel's rooftop.

"Sure, let's talk," Selene responded to him.

The two of them sat down on the couch, facing each other. Selene felt a little bit uneasy.

She was thinking about what explanation she would give him for those words she said that didn't make sense to Renz. Those things happened in her previous life, not in this new lifetime so Renz would never understand.

Renz was observing Selene. He was not speaking yet. He also didn't know where to start.

Since no one had spoken yet, the entire living room was engulfed by awkward silence.

After a few moments, Renz finally broke the silence. He sighed deeply before speaking to Selene.

"Selene, are you not mad at me anymore, especially now that Meghan cleared the misunderstanding about the kissing incident?"

Selene took her time, analyzing her feelings whether she was still upset and mad at him or not anymore.

After she got the answer, Selene looked straight into Renz's eyes as she shook her head.

"No, I'm not mad anymore."

Selene meant those words. After hearing the story from Eros, Selene felt better now. She was glad that she was able to pour her heart out last night although she was not supposed to tell those words to Renz.

But she couldn't turn back time. So she just had to face what would happen in her future. She knew she had to move on from the past so that she could have a fresh start with Renz in this lifetime.

Selene had just realized that those things already happened in her previous life so she should not blame Renz in this second life. Instead of getting mad at him, she should grab this opportunity to win his heart and not let him be stolen by another woman, especially Micaela.

Meanwhile, Renz was still in deep thought after hearing Selene's reply. Just to make sure, Renz asked her again.

"Aside from Meghan's lies, do you have any more reasons why you got upset with me?"

Renz was waiting for her to explain those words she said last night.

"Selene, do you still remember what you have said to me at the hotel's rooftop?" he added, wondering if Selene could remember it even though she was drunk at that time.

Selene took a deep breath and nodded her head, "I could only remember some little details."

"Can you explain to me the meaning of those words? I can't understand…" Renz took a short pause, just observing Selene's expression before he continued his words.

"I can't understand because I don't remember betraying you. Believe it or not, I swear I don't have another woman. I am honoring the promise of our two families with each other. I will not do that to you."

Selene lowered her gaze while biting her lips. She started playing with her fingers. She often did this whenever she would try to lie or when she was nervous about something.

Renz was anticipating her reply. He was just silent, staring at her intently. He wanted to know her reason. He was bothered by her words the whole night. He was not able to sleep well.

Furthermore, he couldn't forget Selene's sad and pained expression as well as her anger. He believed that Selene would never act like that without a valid reason. So he wanted to know what triggered Selene to feel those negative emotions.

'Did she see me with another woman, maybe a colleague and she misunderstood it, thinking that I was cheating on her? But I can't understand her statement about Grandma Elysa being gone and about her best friend.' Renz thought to himself.

Selene raised her head. She could see the puzzlement and confusion in Renz's eyes. She knew that Renz wanted some answers so, after a few seconds, Selene had finally responded to Renz's query.

"I'm sorry, Renz. I think those things happened because of my drunkenness. Please don't take it to the heart." As expected, Selene used her drunkenness as an alibi.

However, Renz was not yet a hundred percent convinced. He was thinking that Selene had a deeper reason behind her actions.

"Selene, please… Be honest with me. Did I upset you? Did you see something, that's why you were in doubt with me, thinking that I cheated on you?"

"How about Grandma Elysa? Why did you say something like that? And who's your best friend? Why did you say that you died because of her?"

Renz could no longer hold his curiosity as he bombarded Selene with so many questions.

Selene exhaled deeply, her face filled with uncertainties. Would Renz believe her if she would tell him the truth?

She was feeling doubtful. She might scare him away by saying 'Yes, I died and I was reborn again to have a second chance.'

With complicated emotions on her face, Selene had spoken again.

"Renz, don't misunderstand. I'm not crazy. I am definitely sane and in my right mind. It's just that…"

Selene paused again. She never imagined that explaining to Renz would require her to use millions of her brain cells.

'I swear I will never get myself drunk again and put myself in a difficult situation like this.' Selene had sworn to herself.

Selene was lost in her thoughts when she heard Renz's voice, urging her to continue.

"It's just that… what Selene?"

"The truth is… those things happened in my…" Selene bit her lower lip. She was having a hard time thinking about what to say that would become believable to Renz.

"The truth is those things happened in my… dream!"

Renz: "..."

'Dream? Did she just say dream?' Renz looked at her with amusement.

"I fell asleep for a few minutes after getting drunk. Then I had a dream… a really bad dream. In my dream, my grandma died and I was left alone. Then you and my best friend comforted me. But after that, the two of you fell in love with each other." Selene spoke spontaneously, not looking into Renz's eyes.

"You asked me to break off the engagement because of her. Then something bad happened. We were kidnapped. You came to rescue us and confronted the kidnapper. The man pointed a gun at my best friend."

"Seconds before he pulled the trigger, I ran in the middle to shield her. I was the one who got shot and died on her behalf. If I didn't do it, I knew you would protect her so I chose to sacrifice myself."

"In my dying moments, you hugged me and cried for me. I was so happy back then, knowing that you would cry for me. That's what happened in my dream."

Renz fell silent after hearing those words from Selene. He couldn't explain what he was feeling right now.

"I'm sorry, Renz. I was drunk so when I woke up I thought everything was real. So when you came to me and I saw you on the rooftop, I got mad. I ranted at you without realizing that everything that I saw was just a dream… a nightmare."
