Vladimir would never forget what he saw that day. The flag that fluttered on the top of the imposing black tower, portraying a big green turtle that was enduring the relentless attacks of a mighty dragon. Bravely, without a single shred of hesitation. It was an indestructible shield that protected the glory of the Empire.

"This is our pride as well as our goal. If you pass the tests, never forget what you are feeling now..." Reys said upon seeing that the silver-haired youth was staring at the building in a daze. The words of the man awoke him from his stupor making him feel embarrassed, but he could sense that Reys wasn't making fun of him, he truly meant what he said. He couldn't help than answer with stutter.

"I-I won't forget. Never..."

The young man nodded with a smile and then he gestured at the people to wait as he entered the tower. A few minutes had passed until he returned together with several middle-aged men and women. One of them moved forward and moved his lips.

"I will now announce the contents of the examination. The test will be a simple one this year. It will be a one versus one duel against us. If you manage to endure for more than three exchanges, we will accept you in the academy. Since there will be soon other people coming here, let's finish with this already. You can use anything you want if you believe that it will help you in a fight."

*******

The crowd and the examiners moved toward the training area of the Department. There were many weapons that someone could choose, as well as, large spaces that people could fight against each other to their hearts' content.John observed the first applicants who entered in the arenas. He could only shake his head when he realized how incompetent most people of their group were. Many of them could use magic, but their sense of battle was laughable. He started to wonder why people like these were recommended with this kind of skill. When he thought that everyone here was weak, a boy started fighting against one of the teachers. He had blond hair and two pointed ears. He was using a bow, a weapon that only common soldiers were usually using. The blond youth was extremely agile and versatile, using wind magic to create distance from his opponent and shooting arrows continuously.

"Impressive!" John exclaimed.

"He is undoubtedly a veteran" Vladimir also commented excitedly.

"What do you think are his chances?"

"It depends... If the teacher starts using magic, he doesn't stand a chance..."

"It's a pity that he can't use wind magic in his arrows. Our style of fight would be perfect for him. If he could use his bow and the magic simultaneously, I can't imagine how strong he could be..." John said as he sighed. The fight didn't continue for long, the teacher used earth magic to create a wall in front of him so that he could block all the attacks of the youth and he started throwing the stone javelins he was creating one after another. The boy had already used almost all of his mana, making him vulnerable to his opponent's attacks. When one of the javelins pierced his left shoulder, he finally fell on the ground exhausted.

"Good job! Your brother would be proud!" the teacher praised him and then shouted to the man that was recording the results.

"Gregory Wardrog passes the test!"

"Did you hear what he said?" Vladimir asked with fear.

"I am afraid that I did. As expected I guess from the brother of Jason" the brown-haired boy replied with an awkward smile.

The silver-haired youth was about to open his mouth again, but John's turn to enter the arena had come.

The person in front of him was a middle-aged woman that was holding a spear. He remembered that she was a user of water magic, a person that could be annoying in a battle. That being said, he was confident that he could win this fight easily. The youth approached slowly the woman with an unreadable expression on his face. The examiner frowned upon seeing his relaxed attitude. She readied her spear and attacked without hesitation, aiming at his shoulder. When the weapon was about to pierce the boy, John started to disappear like he was a ghost.

"What the hell!" the woman cursed as she tried to turn around, but she realized that she couldn't move. She suddenly felt a sharp pain on her left ribs. The teacher desperately tried to free herself from whatever restrained her and when she finally managed to do it, she created countless frost arrows ready to destroy the boy that injured her.

"Stop Daniela!" a shout sounded, making her wake up from her madness. Daniela looked at the endless arrows with fear, realizing that she almost went berserk. She had never felt so humiliated in her life. She looked at the man who talked to her and hurriedly apologized.

"I am sorry, Lloyd, I thought that I would die for a moment and lost my mind..." she said as she touched her wound from where blood was flowing continuously.

"Your name?" Lloyd asked John alarmed.

"John Smith, teacher..." he answered innocently.

"Oh, it's you. Alright, John Smith passes the test!" he said as he moved towards Daniela. When he checked her wound, a frown appeared on his face before calling another man to come here. The brown-haired boy walked under the stunned gazes of the crowd to where Gregory was standing.

"I still don't even know what magic he used..." Daniela whispered.

"It was dark magic. As for how he used it, I am not sure. If it wasn't an examination, you could have lost your life. You were too careless. Make sure to learn from today's mistake." Lloyd replied.

Everyone was commenting on the fight excitedly, but the next person that entered the arena, made all of them to close their mouths dumbfounded.

The teacher this time was cautious from the very beginning, influenced by the previous duel. Unfortunately, no matter how careful he was, he couldn't expect that the youth in front of him would use two elements. Vladimir didn't delay and immediately used his greatsword to attack the man. The examiner who was using a sword tried to block the strike, but the ice magic of the youth froze his weapon. It was only natural to be surprised upon seeing someone using magic and swordsmanship at the same time. The teacher tried to repress his astonishment as he attempted to retreat, but the youth didn't plan on giving him the chance to use magic. Every time the poor man wanted to manipulate his mana, Vladimir would mercilessly interrupt him without a second thought. The teacher desperately tried to use fists and grabs to turn the situation around, but upon seeing the sand armor with the spikes that his opponent was wearing, he almost puked blood from his anger.

'Fucking bastard! Did an enemy send you to create trouble for me? I can't use my sword because you froze it, you don't let me use magic and now you even use the earth element to create an armor. Do you have to be so amazing? If I find another countermeasure, will you suddenly turn into a god?'

The man, in the end, was forced to surrender, making him the first teacher in the history of the Academy to lose so pathetically to an examinee. The rest of the examiners looked viciously at the remaining applicants, ready to fight with their lives on the line. Nobody learned what happened later expect of the people that were present.
