Chapter 45: The Hungry Ghoul (2)

The hungry Infector growled at the two of them before moving forward again. The horrifying growls indicated it had it with playing around with its food. It hopped at Kevin again. Even with the injured leg, it was faster than they could handle.

Kevin circulated his mana in his last attempt to infuse the spear with it. He rushed every bit of his mana into the spear before he could see the mana releasing like thin smoke from the cold spear. The mana was emitting in haste from the spear tip. It wouldn't last long with his meniscal amount of Magic power.

He didn't take any defensive stance this time. Keeping his left foot forward with the spear holding it in the middle-upper arm, Kevin resolved his vision at the huge beast and assaulted with a piercing strike.

The mindless infector ahead didn't back down either. It struck with its left claw with no mercy.

The spearhead pierced the palm of the ignorant monster as it roared in agony. The tip was sharper than before, as Kevin was supplying every bit of his strength and Maha Mana. With a wild cry, Kevin shoved it harder as the spearhead emerged from the back of its palm.

But the thing was not your average Infector. Actually, there's nothing average about it with its humongous size and monstrous strength. It didn't rest there, jerked the pierced arm, roaring.

Kevin tried to keep his hold on to his spear, but found it difficult when the varmint jerked harder. The spear loosened from his palm, even loosened from the creature's palm before jerking metres away from him. And then another dropkick smashed into his chest, breaking most of the ribs that were left unshattered.

His balance got rocked as he jerked back sideways as well.

The monster rushed at Kevin again, but the time he bought was enough for Byul to cast another spell. The only attack spell she knew was the Wind Blade, so she didn't experiment anything new with it. Just infused the circle with enough mana before casting an acceleration magic circle into it. But the varmint didn't let her do as she wished. It dashed with madness towards the sorry figure of Kevin, laying powerless on the floor without his spear.

Without completing the acceleration circle, she shot the Wind Blade at its head before yelling. "Hurry, Kevin. Move."

The magic spell hit right at the back of its head. If it was any normal Infector, this spell would be enough for its head to blast into pits. But unfortunately for her and Kevin, it was nothing of that ordinary Infector. The head jerked out a bit as some discoloured liquid with a reeking stretch came out of it, before it healed again. It didn't even fall this time, but twisted its body, eyeing her.

Byul's heart turned cold as she gazed at its eye. Red with anger and hunger. She knew she had screwed it big. Her heart palpitated as she stroked her waist to find some throwing knives. But nothing was there.

Her heartbeat fastened as she found out that it was advancing towards her with the cruel eye of its which shone a faint bit of intelligence in it. It didn't rush at her with madness like it did with Kevin, but more smoothly with each stride. Its gazes never left her figure. It appeared to like the terrified expression on her face.

At last, Byul found a knife in her thigh, not the usual throwing knives, but a long knife. Her mind raced as she infuse mana into it before throwing at its head.

But the thing dodged this time, quite easily.

Her expression turned grim. .. She desperately hung onto her wand, trying to cast another Wind Blade. With all this casting and her head being injured, moreover, the evil thing coming in her way, didn't let her complete the spell. With no solution, she chose to flee, but only after covering a metre of the distance she spewed out a mouthful of blood. Her complexion, which was already pale, turned colourless. Now there was nothing she could do.

Her body dropped to the cold stone floor in a lifeless manner. She lost all the constraints of her body and Maha mana.

It's the side-effects of a failed cast. The mana inside her body was wreaking havoc as she laid on the ground, immobilised.

She was regretting her division of coming here. .. even with all that thievery and begging, at least she had her life. Byul sighed as she looked at the giant monster that was about to stomp her head. At that moment, she almost lost all her fear. Even the horrendous red eyes of the thing didn't frighten her anymore. Tears flowed automatically from her eyes as she closed her eyes.

"Hey, tough guy, why fight a girl?" Kevin roared his way, advancing towards the monster with bare hands. He smashed his body into its humongous figure. "Fight with a man."

Byul opened her eyes to notice the sight of an unarmed man wrestling with a three-metre tall monster. She looked at the desperation showed in the eyes of Kevin as he yelled again.

"Byul, rollback." He didn't know what was happening inside her body. The Mana was wreaking havoc, disabling her from any action. He yelled again, blood was dripping from his body, even his body started to paralysed from the mucus, but he didn't stop. "Quick, I can't hold it longer."

'It's useless,' yet Byul tried her best to move away from the approaching foot.

'You can't stop that thing.' Her inside knew how horrifying the thing was. Even five of Kevin's and hers wouldn't be enough to stop it.

But she struggled to roll away, she didn't bother with the pain in her head, nor the one from the berserk mana inside her body—burning incinerate her insides. She finally rolled a few inches away.

But the reality was cruel. The thing kicked Kevin in the chest mercilessly as he knocked down metres away again, coughing out a couple of mouthfuls. Now Kevin was unsure if any of his ribs were left unshattered. Even his back was broken.

The Infector didn't run to Kevin; it started with the one that was close by. It tried to stomp her head again.

'This is the end," she looked at the struggling figure of Kevin. He couldn't even get up now. Her eyes didn't leave him as the foot approached her head. 'It will end in a blink, at least this pain will stop.'

But nothing stomped her head. She became confused as she heard the growled of the Infector. Then she heard another voice.

"Apologies for being late."
