Elizabeth's lips curled into a fond smile. Opening her arms to Mandy, she spoke in a mock teasing tone, "Silly girl, why the tears?"

Mandy walked right up into Elizabeth's arms and wrapped her own arms around the woman. As if broken from the surge of relief, she let out quiet sobs on Elizabeth's shoulder. "Professor Elizabeth, I'm so happy to see you."

The older woman understood the weight of her words. She ran a comforting hand over Mandy's shoulder. "I am too," she replied.

Mandy gave her a big smile even as her eyes still shimmered with tears. "How are you, Professor?"

Elizabeth loosened her arms around Mandy and wiped of her tears with her thumb. "I've been well. Everything's going to be fine."

Elizabeth's appearance filled Mandy with gratitude. There were a plethora of words that wanted to escape from her lips—gratitude, affection, elation. Under the density of these emotions, Mandy found it impossible to string them into coherence.

There was no doubt in her now that Adrian would be saved.

It was as if Elizabeth's presence led Mandy to find the one thing she had desperately been wringing out from during every minute of this ordeal: hope.

"Let me see the boy." Elizabeth smiled gently.

Mandy stood beside her as she bent over and examined Adrian's condition. With the calmness of a seasoned doctor, she unbuttoned his clothes and pressed a few spots on his body, her eyes observing him carefully.

The tension was almost tangible as she checked the boy's body. There was a heavy silence as everyone held their breath. They waited, half-hopeful and half-anxious, for the doctor's conclusion.

"His skin seems to be normal. No swelling or lumps on his body... His vital signs are stable, too. The only thing is his face. Why does he look so unwell?" Elizabeth fixed her watchful eyes on Adrian's face and felt a strange uneasiness settle in her gut.

"That's also what I'm most confused about. Recently, he has been feeling drowsy all the time. He doesn't stay awake for long, even when he has just woken up. He will just fall asleep again after a few minutes," Mandy answered, a frown settling on her face as she saw the shift in Elizab

When Elizabeth and Shawn left, Bruce had gone with them. Nathan and Mandy walked them to the elevator.

In the dead of night, the corridors of the hospital seemed like a bleak, endless path. The crude scent of disinfectant turned the air sharp with pungency. Nathan did not flinch even as the air reminded him of acid. After staying as long as he had been in the hospital, he had grown accustomed to its characteristic smell.

He held Mandy's hand in his, wrapping her delicate hands in a reassuring grip.

"You terminated the contract with the Sus Bank? Why?" Mandy asked in a low voice.

"Because I hate seeing you hurt. The only way I can go after Eve is if I terminate the contract." Nathan squeezed her hand.

Mandy lifted her gaze at him and watched his face. As always, she couldn't decipher the thoughts that lay behind his dark eyes.

He did it all for her. He went that far, just so he could protect her feelings.

A pleasant ache bloomed in her chest. She looked at him tenderly, letting her eyes speak for herself. After a moment, she spoke, "You didn't have to do that. Actually … I don't mind it all that much. I would feel too bad about the investment. One billion is plenty of money. I wouldn't be able to earn that huge sum even if I worked my whole life."

Nathan chuckled as he looked at her. "Several billions are cheap change compared to you. It's just one billion. Besides, have you forgotten who your husband is?"
