Alyssa could hear the sharp sound produced by the nail when it hit the ground. The sound of that metal clanking on the ground was heavy on her ears. It was her last hope and just like the broken nail, her hopes broke too. Her breath hitched. She could see everything clearly. She felt like everything was happening in slow motion.

The monster was in front of her with his mouth open. She could see its every pointy teeth. There were teeth present in his jaws too. they were short and pointy, just like the rest of the teeth. She could see the monster's jaw dislocating from its place so that he can swallow her in one single fluid motion just like snakes.

It is better to be eaten as a whole than to be shredded into pieces. She bet the monster was so hungry that it didn't bother to cut her into pieces, limb by limb, and chew her.

If she were in some other place, she would probably laugh at these weird thoughts passing through her brain. But she was now petrified, rooted to the ground, without even blinking.

She can see the monster's hand approaching her. It didn't have fingers. And his nails were not turned into claws. Rather his whole digit was pointy and sharp and it grew straight from the palms. Maybe those digits were not made of cartilage because when they touch Alyssa's face, she could tell they were hard, just like metal.

The monster chuckled and caressed Alyssa's face with his pointy claws leaving a trace of broken skin in its place. Blood oozed out from the broken part that made the monster growl dangerously.

He opened his mouth to take a bite of her flesh when something flashed before Alyssa at lightning speed. The thing hit the monster in his head making it look at the source of the thing.

Alyssa looked towards it too. She could see several men standing at the door with guns in their hands. They were dressed in black robes and had their face covered. Alyssa could only see their eyes. There was a bright blue colored symbol stitched on the left side of their chest. The symbol was of a wolf's face in howling position with its fangs bared.

The thing that had hit the monster just now was the bullet shot by one of them. But the bullet had missed its mark and had shot the monster's left arm above the elbows.

It growled towards them and with one fluid motion leaped towards the men.

"Get down!" One of them ordered in a loud voice.

And as if the like a robot performing on a command, Alyssa automatically crouched down. She covered her head with both her arms and buried herself in her knees.

The werewolves that used to live with the humans too were treated like this. They were hunted down by them and killed. They were forced to leave the main continent and to settle in this continent away from the eyes of humans to survive. The same things happened with vampires, witches any other creatures that were different from humans.

She could hear the men thrown away and colliding with the walls and then hitting back to the ground because of gravity. But she remained in that position. After a few seconds, everything became calm. There were no more gunshots, no more howls.

Alyssa raised her head and looked before her. She could see around six-seven bodies thrown across the room and among those bodies one was the most noticeable one, the body of the monster.

Alyssa pulled herself from the ground and gave out a small dry laugh. Her legs were still shaking and her whole body felt wobbly. But she was excited, happy to be alive. It was like a heavyweight had lifted off her chest. She felt light. She looked around but suddenly her vision blurred. She shook her head to make the nausea go away but suddenly everything turned dark. She could feel herself falling. She was ready to take the hit and feel the pain but the pain never came. Only a scent remained. A scent of lavender and citrus and something else, something very familiar.

*******************

Beep…. Beep…. Beep….

Beep.beep.beep.beep....

Alyssa could hear a frantic noise from god knows where. It sounded very familiar and very mechanical. It was annoying. Her heart was thumping in her chest. Her whole body was drenched in sweat.

Memories of a monster came rushing down to her. She was in a dark room and a scary monster was approaching her. she was running but there was no place to run. It was like her feet were stuck to the ground. She wanted to run but she was stuck at the same place. She wasn't moving forward at all. Alyssa looked back. The monster was at her tail. The monster clutched her throat and she couldn't breathe at all.

"Alyssa…."

She heard someone calling her.

"Alyssa….."

She heard this voice again. It sounded so familiar.

"Alexander?" Alyssa called out in the dark.

"Alyssa we are here. Open your eyes."

"Alexander… Where are you? I couldn't see you at all." Alyssa called out once again. She frantically looked for Alexander in every direction but she could see was black. Everything was dark around her.

"Alexander where are you?" Alyssa said and kneeled down to the ground. She was sobbing.

Suddenly she heard a growl behind her and her eyes opened.

It was too bright. She couldn't see it at all. The light was piercing her eyes. it was a torture. She groaned and once again closed her eyes.

The next time when she opened her eyes, she could see two figures looming over her. The figures were shaking. She closed her eyes and once again opened it, focusing on the figure.

Are you alright Princess?" It was the doctor. He said looking worriedly at her.

Alyssa nodded her head in response.

"Ok, now try to follow the light." He said focusing a small LED light on her eyes.

Alyssa followed the light.

"Ok. Good. Now, how many fingers are here?" He said by showing three fingers to her.

"Th.. Three." Alyssa croaked. Her throat felt like sandpaper.

"W..Water." She said with difficulty.

The nurse standing beside the doctor rushed towards the side table to fill a glass of water for her. Alyssa took the glass from her.

"Slowly"

Before the doctor can complete his word, Alyssa drank the water in big gulps but before she could finish the whole glass, she started coughing. Her throat was dry earlier but after drinking water, they now start paining. She knew that she has to drink water slowly, sip by sip. It was normal protocol and Alyssa knew it. But when she saw water before her, she forgot everything. There was only one thing in her mind, to drink.

Alexander opened her wardroom at that scene. He then saw the medical staff just standing there doing nothing and that made him angry.

"What do you think you are doing here? Why are you all just standing here and doing nothing when your patient is suffering?" he roared at them.

Alyssa waved her hand at him signaling that everything was okay, that she was fine and it was not the doctor's fault. However, this signal was received in the opposite way by Alexander.

He scanned Alyssa and said, "See, she is not even able to breathe properly now and maybe her hands are twitching."

If Alyssa was not having the cough fits, she would have laughed very hard.

The medical personnel's lips twitched too at his sentence but none of them dared to laugh it aloud in front of their Prince.

Alexander neared Alyssa and started patting her back gently.

"I am fine," Alyssa said gently once her cough subsided.

"No dear, you are not. You took a lot of hits and a lot of scary things happened to you. And I am so sorry for not protecting you. I would have protected my little sister. How am I going to protect these people when I couldn't even protect my own family." Alexander said guiltily. This incident was a heavy blow to him. and looking at Alyssa's swollen and bandaged face, he became more guilty.

"I know our plan has a lot of loopholes. But everything is okay now Alex. Don't think more about it. We learn from our experiences and I know next time you will do better." She continued, "And relax because it was OUR plan, you don't have to shoulder all the responsibilities just by yourself."
