Chapter 206 - Introductions

Her words were enough for Ethan to understand. She trusted him for something he thought didn't amount to much, but Maple was saying his actions gave her the hope to live, and based on this very hope she came to trust him completely in such a short amount of time, thus the reason for her enormous loyalty.

Even if he knew something more about loyalty now, Ethan had no clue on how to get closer to Reyna. She was of a different character from Maple, as if he tried to help her in some way, he believed she would be more scared than anything else, so it was better from his perspective if he only tried to talk with her a little, as it was better to make her understand here it was safe.

These thoughts claimed his mind, but he was still focused on what was happening. He didn't want to make it sound like he doubted her, so he lowered his head as he apologized for the strange question, to which Maple replied shaking her head. In fact, she also didn't like when Ethan lowered his head.

But before they could say anything else about that matter, Ethan saw the group composed of Riveria, Tiona, Lefiya, Hestia and Lili, followed by Glenda and Reyna next to them approaching him.

"...What's the matter?"

The first to talk was Tiona as she casually locked her gaze on him while asking this question. She didn't mind the overall tension at all, so she sat in the opposite crouch as she saw Ethan with Maple on his l.a.p.

While she waited for his answer though, Riveria met his eyes without actually saying anything regarding the 'matter' he had to talk them about.

"..We should hurry, otherwise the food will grow cold."

She helped the girls out, so it was only natural she didn't want the food to be cold, but Ethan's serious expression was enough for her to sigh as she wondered what happened now.

With the most anxious in the group being Lefiya, they all moved next to Tiona, but since the crouch was too small for everyone to fit, Riveria was the one to sit while the others gathered in half a circle behind them.

"...Well, it's quite complicated to explain easily."

He decided it was better to start by telling them he could form bonds with anyone who was willing, or not, to submit to him and see him as their master. Although the other girls were surprised though, Glenda was the only one who 'knew' about this, so she just sighed.

"..I can confirm what he's saying is the truth as he can command me to an extent..."

She was actually hesitating to tell Reyna the same could be said for her, but before she could continue, Ethan cut her down.

"...This is based on [Loyalty] though. Generally if the subordinate trusts me the order will be executed flawlessly, but if the latter isn't loyal to me the command won't be possible to order, so it's only a matter of trust between me and the subordinate in question..."

After having replied to Riveria's questions, Lefiya was the one to step in.

"S...So, as long as someone views themselves as your subordinate, they'll be linked to you in this kind of bond?"

It was normal from his explanation to think as long as an individual would view Ethan as his master it would result in the requirements for the contract being met, so he explained how not only the subordinate had a role in this, he could also decide to not see them as subordinates.

That's where the conversation deepened. He started from that question explaining how it also worked on any intelligent beings, but he had no clue if it worked with monsters and such, but...

"...But even though I don't know, I managed to make Maple my subordinate."

After he was done explaining what he did in order to make Maple his subordinate, as well as the various perks this gave both of them, everyone in the room was shocked.

"...So you can say Maple now understands us?"

It was Hestia who came up with this question. She saw how a normal tamer worked, but she had never heard in her life about someone able to make an animal learn human language.

Nodding, Ethan looked at Maple as the latter was really shy to introduce herself. She followed the whole conversation without adding a word, but now everyone was staring at her with expectations or at least that's what she believed, since she wasn't looking at them.

Although she was looking down a moment ago, Maple slowly looked up, but the moment she could see their stares she was the one to be surprised. Although they expected her to introduce herself, they weren't scary. The stares she was usually habituated to see in her previous world were different. They looked at her with hate, someone else with envy but at this moment, nobody was looking at her like that.

"...I...My name is Maple...my family name is..MoonFlame. It's a p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e to finally introduce myself to you all..."

She couldn't handle her embarrassment, so she introduced herself in the most formal way she knew, something that made Riveria look at her with more respect than before as she understood her lineage was no laughing matter to be talking in this way...

"The fox..actually talked!!"

Tiona was amazed by this. A fox who couldn't say anything just a few days ago, was fluently talking without any issue, even if she was embarrassed, as if she knew that language from ages.

"Was it also the power of your new bond?"

Before he could explain though, Riveria stopped her as she replied.

"...I think we should introduce ourselves first before asking any further question."

Her respect for her increased exponentially, so it was only obvious Riveria wanted to properly consider her as an intelligent being from now on, even if before she already considered her as such.

With Riveria introducing herself as everyone else did the same one by one after her the latter was really happy for their consideration.

After their introductions came to an end, Ethan replied to Tiona's question explaining how the more loyal a person was to him, the more the bond between them would be strong, and since Maple had complete trust in him, it was possible for her to learn how to properly talk with him, as he now knew the languages she learnt through her life as well.

"...Does that mean if you form a bond with a person of every race, you'll be able to speak fluently in all languages..?"

The question asked by Lili was only natural, as he himself came up with this question. It would only be advantageous if he learnt more languages with 'no effort', but he had no intention to do that at the moment, as he had way more things to consider before that.

"...I don't think I'll be able to form a bond of this level with any subordinate, and there would be many problems if I did that."

Just the thought of having dozens of people, everyone of a different race with the thought of increasing the loyalty of them all was tiring in his mind, but it was only the tip of the iceberg, so there was no need for him to trouble himself so much for something he didn't even know could be done, as everyone had their different way to increase loyalty, or at least that's what he believed.

But while the conversation was focused on the perks subordinates had, Reyna spoke in the lowest tone of voice Ethan had ever heard.

"...Does that mean if our loyalty towards you will increase..you will be able to talk in our mother languages..?"

Her question made him think about it, but in the end he didn't know if the fact the contract with Maple was different could change their 'rewards'.

"..It's probably as you say, though I have no actual proof since my bond with Maple was created with a different energy called [Spiritual Energy] and not Mana."

Hearing him, Riveria was immediately interested in knowing what he was talking about, but she chose to stay quiet for the moment as otherwise Reyna's voice would be totally shadowed by hers.

"...I see."

She didn't say anything more, but the fact she spoke to him made Glenda smile as even if he didn't know anything just yet, Reyna seemed to be a bit less afraid to approach him, even if only for small moments.

With a few panels telling him Glenda's loyalty increased once again, Ethan understood now her loyalty was easier to increase if he approached Reyna, or if Reyna opened up to him a bit.

'Even if I had no way to learn about her past, She's precious to Glenda, and she wants me to help her with her fear of men..but again I'm not doing anything for that, she just spoke to me.'

Deciding it wasn't time to wrap his head around this issue, Ethan had to explain to Riveria how [Spiritual Energy] worked, and this was enough to make Maple understand her guesses were right, this wasn't the world she was used to living in, but even if that was true and Ethan had yet to explain this to her, she completely trusted him, and she had no fear of the unknown, not when the same unknown warmed her heart this much.

'I'll have to believe in him.'

That's what her heart and mind wanted, so she ignored the conversation as she chose to approach Lefiya.

Leaving Ethan's l.a.p, Maple reached her destination after a while as she used her paw to claim Lefiya's attention. The latter, focused in the conversation Riveria and Ethan were having about Spiritual Energy and what he knew so far about it. Her d.e.s.i.r.e to know more of magic was yelling at her this information could be useful in the future, so she was paying extreme attention to it, but feeling Maple's paw on her leg, Lefiya flinched for a moment before understanding it was Maple.

Knowing Ethan would explain again to her if she asked, Lefiya looked at Maple with a smile on her face.

"..Do you want something from me?"

She lowered herself so that their faces were almost at the same height, but she wasn't ready for what she heard next.

"I want to k-know you. Elves are considered an incredibly rare race in my home town, so I'm really curious..."

She spoke to her heart's content, to which Lefiya replied with a surprised expression, but her smile didn't dissipate.

"...I understand. If you think I'm good enough to be your friend, then let's be friends"

Maple used the words "know" but from her words and embarrassed expression, Lefiya understood her struggle to ask her to become her friend, so she didn't hesitate to help her out, as she pictured in her mind the first moments she asked Ais to be friends with her.

"...Really!?"

She was really happy. Even if she was embarrassed and insecure, Lefiya seemed to be as gentle as Ethan told her.

Her joyful reply made Lefiya's smile widen as she nodded to her question.

'...She's adorable...'
