Chapter 196 - [Avian]

After the atmosphere at the table had returned to normal, nothing particularly important marked the morning and, with Ethan as every day trained hard under the tutelage of Riveria. Even if there was a bit of awkwardness between the two, the moment his magic was involved, her seriousness claimed her thoughts as she immediately wanted to test out the results of his training.

"...Hit me with all you've got"

That's what she said, but unlike the last times, Ethan knew well he just couldn't breakthrough her barrier anyway, what troubled him was the surroundings, as another of his training was exactly learning how to direct the force of his blow only to one direct point instead of letting it spread through the air.

During their first training sessions in fact, Riveria was able to discover Ethan was fundamentally using his [Avian] wrongly, or at least he wasn't using his abilities to their full extent.

"You have to concentrate your power in a single spot, that will serve as an evaluation of your current power"

She wanted him to first try developing what she called his spell's first form, using the air pressure as the main force behind his blow, but if he couldn't force that air to compress and hit a single point without dispersing a little, then the attack would obviously lose a lot of its power before it even landed on the opponent.

But that wasn't all. Regarding the second form, using the wind as the main force, Riveria realized also the way he utilized wind was incorrect. He had the capacity to slash powerful attacks with his legs and arms, and based on how he attacked the force of the blow could be different, but she couldn't understand why this happened before a close observation of him executing the technique in the strongest version he knew.

After a few days though, this mystery was also solved.

"It's not like your [Wind Variant] can be stronger or weaker randomly. To give you a quick example, kicking instead of punching generates more energy, which is why the attack seems more powerful, but in reality it's just that you're moving additional wind than what a normal punch can move, for example."

To 'test' the explanation she came up with, Riveria asked Ethan if he was able to generate more of what he called kinetic energy before using [Avian], and even if he initially had problems in twisting his body in a more forceful way than before, his dexterity wasn't just for show.

Jumping in the air, Ethan rapidly twisted his body to make a sort of wheel movement in the air, with the intent to generate as much kinetic force as possible, and the result of [Avian] was proven a success, just because Riveria having received the attack could feel the obvious difference from a normal kick, or punch.

"It's definitively stronger than befo--"

Before she could complete her sentence though, Ethan who didn't exactly know how to land back on the ground safely, couldn't complete his movement and fell on his back, causing Riveria to giggle.

But returning to the current day, Riveria asked him to have a quick additional spar to test the results of his training to master [Avian] to a new level, and the results were exactly as she expected. Not only the [Air Variant] was no way more precise and at the same time lethal for a normal adventurer of Ethan's level, the [Wind Variant] if used with extreme body movements could probably wipe out an entire group of adventurers.

'The only flaw of the latter is that not only twisting your body that much in the air is difficult, aiming too becomes harder, but I believe he will be able to understand when to use such movements and when to simply use other spells to fight...'

It was unlikely for him to use Wind in such a way, since while he was twisting himself in the air, the dangers of being attacked were quite high, and he didn't have any kind of protection to defend himself at that moment, since it was even difficult to simply aim.

After carefully evaluating Ethan's battle power, Riveria could guess if she had to compare him to normal standard, right now a peak level 3 wouldn't survive his special Wind attack, while probably if not without some kind of skill able to make the latter resist his attacks, a few powerful 'shots' filled with the [[Air variant] would be enough to knock the adventurer in question down.

'...Not bad, but still not enough'

Riveria expected him to grow into a very powerful adventurer in the future, probably even able to breakthrough her barrier easily once he reached her level, something frightening considering not even people on her level could 'easily' crush it.

Seeing as always Riveria's barrier absorbing all the attacks he poured weeks to nourish, Ethan sighed as he was about to take a break before sparring with Tiona, but he was interrupted by Glenda...

"Master. Sorry to disturb you during your rest..."

Her presence here made him flinch. After breakfast, he 'ordered' his two subordinates to first settle down and taking their time before actually starting to attend their duties as his maids, so he didn't expect her to be here so soon.

"Is there something I can help you with?"

Looking at her, Ethan could see there was a hint of determination in her eyes, something that intrigued him in knowing more about her reason for coming here...

"I...wanted to ask if it was possible for me to train as well. I may look like this, but this body still have the strength of a former level 4 adventurer, and since I want to be able to protect my master as well, I don't want to neglect training..."

She intended at first to be simply his maid after confirming he would be able to treat Reyna with due care, believing her strength would be enough in any case. But knowing he would treat Reyna even better than what she expected, she felt like it was the perfect match for them, another reason for why she decided to vow to never serve anyone else in her life.

The side part of this was that Ethan was by no means a normal boy. He would have strong foes to face against in the future, and that's something even Loki advised her before even letting her stepping in his house.

'Being a maid is not enough...I have to protect my master's life with my strength...'

She understood quickly her own position wasn't of a merely maid, and even if that wasn't the case, Glenda believed she had the strength to protect her master, so she wouldn't back down from her duty...

'I see. I had yet to check her status, but she's actually 2 levels above me...'

He could understand why Glenda would come asking him if she could train. She likely had to stop being an adventurer because of her own job as a maid, but now that he knew this he was intrigued to know why a level 4 adventurer would fall so low doing this kind of job.

'..It's better to not ask this though...there's no problem if she wants to train, but wouldn't it be better if I send her in the Dungeon with the girls?'

Since she was a level 4, Ethan believed she would surely be useful in the expeditions to come, but his real motive to think about sending her in the Dungeon was to actually have an alarm in case something happened. Light specified the latter wouldn't suddenly send stronger monsters if there wasn't an overwhelming presence able to threaten it, but he couldn't simply think this since it wasn't an information with actual proof, and it was all her speculations...

"About your training, you can either train or accompany the other girls in the Dungeon, I don't mind. But you have to notify me if you plan to do so..."

Even if he could feel the connection between the two, as well as the emotions she felt, Ethan couldn't know how distant she was to him, as well as where she was precisely...

'Her loyalty probably isn't high enough for me to clearly feel her whereabouts...'

That's what he guessed, but while he thought this, Glenda had a satisfied smile on her face as she bowed deeply.

"Thank you for the opportunity, Master. I will dismiss myself for now..."

At her bowing, Ethan sighed.

"You can stop with such pleasantries, I really don't mind if you have more of such small requests, instead you should understand I won't treat you exactly as a maid, more likely a subordinate I need in the future, but from this sudden question of yours I guess you already knew..."

She knew exactly what he was talking about. Even if their contract only mentioned being his maid, Glenda had the intention of following Ethan whatever he wanted to use her for, and she believed his 'payment' was him taking care of 'Reyna'

"...Yes, Master. I actually don't care about anything Master wants me to do, the only thing I want is for Reyna do be happy, that's the only thing I want as a payment..."

Even though she knew, Glenda misunderstood something.

"You're wrong. Taking care of Reyna is a part of the contract as well as my own interest in her. Honestly now that she's tied with me I can't help but wanting to ease her heart, but I want to ease yours in the same way. I may use your skills to my advantage in the future, but before that you and Reyna are my subordinates, so taking care of both of you is my absolute priority..."

He certainly didn't think of Glenda as the disposable pawn she was trying to make him understand she was. He wanted to carefully develop their relationship subordinate-master, and he wanted to ease the burden on both their hearts, as he could see it was quite heavy...

His words once again tore through her thought process. It wasn't something she expected at all, even if he was a righteous person in her eyes, Glenda knew he needed strength for what was to come, so she offered herself as merely a tool able to accomplish her master's wishes, training doing so was only the preparation she needed to be able to give her all, but Ethan was telling her he wanted to ease the burdens on her heart, something nobody ever tried to do...

[[Glenda Acanthus] Loyalty increased by 1]

...

This time, Ethan almost had an headache from the number of panels appearing at the same time, but before that could happen, he asked the system to stop notifing him about this and, after his sight was once again cleared, he could see Glenda had tears running down her cheeks at an overwhelming speed.

She could feel she was becoming to understand what kind of character Ethan was now, and remembering Loki's words she knew once again they were the truth...

"Remember, before stepping foot in this house, common sense doesn't work around Ethan at all."

It was indeed as she said, common sense with Ethan didn't seem to work at all, and after a long pause, Glenda couldn't help but ask.

"Can you tell me why are you willing to go to such lengths...I don't have anything else...if you want my body, you can just ask for it..."

At her words, Ethan shook his head. It was the second time he made Glenda cry, but this time he understood it wasn't exactly a bad feeling.

"Because from the moment you and I were bound in a contract, you're my subordinate, so I'll take care of you considering that as our relationship."

He didn't know what to exactly order her to make her understand, so he just ordered in his mind for her to wipe her tears, and the moment he sent this order, Glenda could immediately feel the connection with Ethan as she did as she was ordered...

"...Understood now?"
