Chapter 54 Lukas The Orphan

Serena Weisse offered the envelope to Lukas, something that he quickly accepted and soon pulled out the document out of it to read. What he saw next was something that changed things.

It was a file on the 'orphan' Lukas.

Background: During the Great War, many Vampire villages were attacked by humans and left devastation in their wake. In one of the secret underground hiding places where Vampire children and babies were taken, a young Vampire baby with a crescent moon birthmark on his upper left arm was found.

Age 10: During his time in the orphanage, young 'Lukas' could have been said to be an extremely quiet child, initially thought of as mute during their earlier years. The head caretaker found him obedient, listens to instructions and rules but kept distant and did not make any friends during his stay

Age 15: During this time, the now teen 'Lukas' explained his desire to live on his own and leave the orphanage. He still appears to have no real connection to any other individual.

Lukas finally closed the document and returned it to the envelope. He couldn't believe what he had just read but then he chose to play it off with a grin.

"So?"

"So…?" Serena Weisse's eyes widened momentarily in disbelief before she shook her head. "Your growth is unprecedented. Check out the next document which came from the Hunter Association. I've asked Miss Emerys di Verdant for a copy of the results of your test."

"That sounds a bit illegal doesn't it?" Lukas commented.

"I am the Overlord of the city of Lux." Serena Weisse frowned. "The right to obtain and read any document which concerns the safety and well-being of the city is within my grasp. Unfortunately, you did not finish all the tests and only took… two? But that is enough to prove my point."

"This is…" Lukas began, but then scrunched up his nose a little. "Yellow Monkey? The names are a bit odd–"

"It means that you can easily kill an ordinary human if you wish." Serena Weisse explained. "That's the basic measurement used in a Vampire's strength. Anything weaker than that is severely lacking and cannot even be considered as possible."

"Emerys said that you only need to pass the first level–the yellow monkey–to be considered as a Hunter." Lukas muttered underneath his breath.

"While there are other threats available in the world beyond us, most of our threats are humans due to the proximity between their lands and ours hence this requirement. Naturally, all Vampires will pass this test–the need for Hunters is a never ending thing. There are always roles to be filled."

"I see…" Lukas said.

This test is a measurement of the strength of the bloodline. Depending on the individual, these are the following results available.

"Wait, what the fuck is this immediate death–" Lukas couldn't help but curse and looked at Serena Weisse questioningly. "Do you mean to say that there are people who'll take this test and actually die during mid-examination?"

Serena Weisse sighed softly and crossed her arms. "This is something that I also do not wholly agree with–but the Guildmaster is someone to be reckoned with. How he operates the Hunter Association is completely his discretion and I am not allowed to interfere that much."

"I know that I took the test but–"

"You should have known what you were signing up for." Serena Weisse clicked her tongue. "But do not worry about such things."

"How can I not worry–these are all innocent people dying!" Lukas exclaimed. "Do you know how many percent of the Vampires actually die during this test? Don't you think this is unfair–"

"Harden your heart." Serena Weisse narrowed her eyes at him.

"W-what?"

"I did not come to you with the intention of hearing your sympathies to those who have died–I have come here to confirm things for myself."

"Confirm what?" Lukas said, suddenly all the more wary. "You've already seen it for yourself that I'm uh… now at least a D Rank in Strength, but that's give or take six years of not going under examination."

"I want to confirm your birthmark."
