CH 1.2

“What? You want to call a nurse and get rid of me?” The old legislator was furious. “Do you know who I am? How dare you treat me like this? Do you believe that if I say one word to your director, he will fire you immediately?”

“Really?” He curled his lips, ignoring the old man’s condescending threat. “Then let him fire me!”

With those words, he spun around and walked away with aplomb.

Mo Chuan Ya watched his unruly rebellious back. Her lips fluttered and flew into a smile. Her bright eyes gleamed, illuminating her appreciation.

She admired this young doctor. He was the only one who had the courage to go against authority when everyone else had to please this misbehaving old man.

But could it be that he was too uninformed to realise that this unassuming old man was likely to become the new Vice-President of Parliament after the voting next week?

“Dai Xingren, I really want to know…” She murmured with a smile. “When you realise that you have offended a vice president of the Legislative Yuan, can you still be so cool?” [T/l: Legislative Yuan = the name of the legislature for Taiwan]

After Dai Xingren had performed the puncture operation on the patient with pericardial infarction and took care of several other injured patients aptly, he returned to the emergency room again.

“I just want to make friends with you.” The assistant smiled kindly. “My last name is Qiao, Qiao Xuan. I think we’ll meet again sometime in future.”

Without giving him time to react, Qiao Xuan shook his hand and left with a smile.

With that said, Qiao Xuan didn’t give him time to react, shook his hand on his own initiative, and left with a smile.

This was simply inexplicable!

This was Dai Xingren’s conclusion. Whether it was that high-profile and rampant old legislator or this small assistant who suddenly showed him affection, they both bored him.

In fact, there were only a few people in the world who did not bore him. Ever since he entered medical school, his life had been nothing but medicine, and it was always the patients or the injured that interested him. He didn’t make friends and was estranged from his classmates. Although he has briefly dated a few girls, he always ends up being unhappy in the end.

They thought he was boring and complained that he didn’t pay full attention to them, and even often ignored them. They always entangled him on their own initiative, and then drifted away.

It didn’t really matter to him. They didn’t touch his heart when they came, and of course they couldn’t hurt him when they left. He just feels tired. Why do people always waste his precious time like that?

It’s even more strange now. There was a young man who said that he wanted to be friends with him. Even the hospital colleagues who work with him can’t stand him anymore. What does Qiao Xuan like about him? He has no homosexual tendencies!

“Huh.” A short smile jumped into his ear, very impolitely.

He raised his eyebrows and turned to a beautiful girl in displeasure. She seemed to be a few years younger than him. Her dark hair softly cascading down her jade neck. Her bright and big eyes were agile and energetic.

“It’s funny to see the look on your face. It seems that you are afraid as if you’re being haunted by a pervert. It’s really interesting.” She commented sweetly, her voice ringing like a string of crystal wind chimes with a tinkling sound which was pleasant to the ear.

Interesting? He stared at this strange girl who had come out of nowhere. No one had ever thought he was interesting since he was a kid.

“Who are you?” he questioned rudely.

“My last name is Mo.” Just as he had only given the old legislator a surname, she answered to him with the same modesty. “I’m a journalist.”

A journalist? As soon as she gave her identity, Dai Xingren, like most people, wanted to retreat three feet. “There is no news worthy of your report here, Miss Mo.”

“Who says there’s nothing?” Mo Chuan Ya tilted her face and smiled at him. “I just happen to think that the way you just confronted that big whale of a politician with the attitude of a little shrimp. That’s kind of heartfelt and this kind of touching news should be worth reporting.”

“Boring.” This was his reaction. “Get out, don’t get in the way here.”

He dropped the words, not looking at her again, and ran back and forth in the emergency room to diagnose and treat injuries.

She refused to leave, and followed him gingerly all the time, looking curiously.

“Why don’t you get out of here?” He turned around and saw her, and shouted angrily. “Do I have to call the guards to take you away?”

“Just looking.” She opened up a peaceful negotiation. “I promise I won’t be in your way.”

“You’re already in the way by being here.” He said with a stern demeanor.

Usually when he looked like that, anyone who knew him would just quickly rub their nose and leave, even his colleagues, but she just gave him a big smile back.

Was she playing a scoundrel with him?

Dai Xingren stood up abruptly in anger, clenching her arms involuntarily, trying to drag her out of the emergency room. But no sooner had he touched her than her eyebrows drew together and he realised something was wrong.

“What’s wrong? Did you hurt your hand?” he asked in a deep voice.

“Nothing, I just bumped it accidentally.” She responded carelessly, trying to keep a smile on her face.

He gave her a blank look and rolled up her sleeve to see the bruise on her right elbow. When he squeezed it, she drew in her breath.

“Almost dislocated.” He accused her sternly. “Don’t you ever say when you’re hurt?”

“It’s just a minor injury.” She breathed heavily and fought back the pain. “There are more injuries here that need healing than I do -“

“That doesn’t mean you can neglect yourself!” He interrupted her. “Come sit down here and I’ll take a look at you.”

She looked at him in amazement at his words. “No, it’s just a minor injury. I’ll just ask one of the nurses to look at it later.” Her injury of this level should be regarded as the same level as that of the old legislator, right? She was ashamed to trouble a house physician, especially now when the emergency room was so short of manpower.

“I told you to sit down!” He ordered unquestionably.

What an overbearing man.

Mo Chuan Ya pouted slightly, but when she saw that he looked unpleasant, she didn’t push her luck and obediently sat down in front of him, letting him diagnose and treat her.

He has a fierce attitude, rough speech, and there must be problems with interpersonal relationships, but when he was treating patients, he was gentle, focused and cautious.

Mo Chuan Ya stared in awe at his seriousness. Her heart inexplicably missing a beat, as if a butterfly had fluttered its wings in her chest.

She was wise enough to realise that the man in front of her might not be a gentleman, but he was definitely a good and considerate doctor. She would probably be happier as his patient than as his friend, because she would be able to count on his wholehearted attention.

A few minutes later, he fixed her injured elbow with a bandage and held it up with a triangle scarf.

“It’s not really dislocated. Is it necessary to wrap it like this?” She stared at her hand helplessly.

“In your current condition, you may dislocate at any time. This is to prevent you from moving.” He explained. “You can take it off by yourself in two days.”

She raised her eyes to look at him and blinked mischievously. “You didn’t do it on purpose, did you? Dr. Dai.”

“What do you mean? “He frowned.

“Because you’re afraid I’ll write something bad about your hospital, you’ve tied my right hand so tightly that I can’t hold a pen or type a word. This is your conspiracy, right?”

“You–” He stared at her, a little hesitant for a while, not sure if he should scold her for making a boring joke, or laugh at her sense of humor.

He hesitated for a few seconds, and then, he was intensely annoyed at his own hesitation.

He was actually hesitating for a woman. This really violated his usual principle of treating others. He won’t laugh. At least he doesn’t laugh at such trivial things.

But had there ever been anything significant in his life to laugh at? He couldn’t think of one.
