11 – Fever

Viktor knew that he had a knack for hurting others.

He’d known since he was a child, even if he couldn’t remember how old he was when he figured it out. Perhaps it was when his mother whispered to her growing stomach.

“My dear child. Please don’t be born.”

He returned, carrying his sleeping mother instead of her caregiver, taking her into her bedroom, and laying her on the bed. As blood dripped from the nape of his neck and wet his white shirt, the Dumfelt family doctor rushed to heal the wound.

Meanwhile, Blight was responding to the interview in his stead.

“As you can see, it is filial piety that motivates our master to become a member of the royal family. Duchess Marina has tried to strangle and kill the master countless times, but our master is still working hard to make his mother’s dream come true.”

As soon as the reporters got the information they needed, they scampered to get the scoop printed.

Viktor walked through the rain and sat in the carriage, Blight quickly joined him and the carriage started.

On their way back to the mansion, Blight asked anxiously.

“Did you receive treatment for your wounds?”

“I should have chosen the monastery that my wife went to.”

“Pardon?”

“It’s very nice here.” He said pulling out a cigarette from his inner pocket.

Blight flicked on a lighter for Viktor and spoke.

“The Melin Monastery is a place I am not familiar with either.”

“My father must have pulled some strings.”

“By the way, she hasn’t sent you a letter since last week when it used to be once every three or four days.”

Blight said, unable to refrain from meddling in Viktor’s affairs.

He thought Viktor wouldn’t answer, but he replied unexpectedly.

“You’re doing things you shouldn’t because of Scarlett.”

Since the state of his mother, which he had been hiding from his subordinates, was made known to the whole country, Viktor’s anger towards Scarlett could not easily be assuaged. Still, no one was able to ask why he was still so angry because nobody expected his anger would last this long.

After staring at him for a while, Blight continued.

“Please don’t get too angry after hearing this, Master.”

Viktor exhaled smoke out the window, looked at Blight, who spoke.

“Your wife… said she was not feeling well, so she moved to the villa last week.”

Hearing this, Viktor asked, “Why should I be angry?”

“The devil left the monastery at will…”

“It was Scarlett who said she would be there for a hundred days. If she wants to come out, she can come out.”

“…was it like that?” Blight asked with a puzzled expression.

Everyone except Viktor thought that Scarlett had no liberty leaving the monastery at will. Perhaps Scarlett thought the same. Viktor opened his mouth. “Is she unwell?” Originally, Scarlett was weak. “Did you say she has a high fever?.”

Viktor knew that she ate too little and didn’t have much of her favourite foods. He frowned slightly at the thought of her being ill.

“Then why did she go to the villa?”

“Sorry?”

“If she doesn’t feel well, she should come home.”

“Ah, ah! Yes, you are right,” Blight exclaimed brightly.

“I will immediately send someone to the villa to bring the Madame.

“Bring her back right now.”

Salantier fever was a frightening disease for the weak.

Viktor rarely wavered. But ash fell on the floor of the carriage as if he had forgotten the cigarette he was smoking, making the obsessive-compulsive Blight twitch.

Barely two months after arriving at the Monastery, Scarlett began to develop a serious fever. She slept in a blanket on the cold stone floor and having to confess her supposed sins every day to Priest Delphio weakened her heart and soul.

Since she was about to die before he could even get her to sign the divorce papers, priest Delphio gave it some thought and sent her away from the Monastery.

As she rode the carriage to the nearby Dumfelt’s Moon Villa, Scarlett felt so heavy with fever that she could not keep her eyes open. In her fevered state, she later caught a glimpse of the doctor telling her that she had a high fever last night and it might be raining tonight. However, when she opened her eyes again later, she felt better thinking she was stronger than she thought. Or maybe the Dumfelt family doctor was great.
