I asked Emily for help, but she didn’t hesitate to tell me she couldn’t.

We read different genres. Emily read books on magic engineering, and I read books on business administration and politics. I thought she was a fellow reader and friend, but it seemed I was the only one who thought we were friends.

“That’s terrible! I thought Emily and I were friends, but it turns out that I was the only one who thought that!”

“Hey! Spare me from your crocodile tears. I didn’t say we weren’t friends, but it’s hard for even friends to annul an engagement agreed on by both families. Besides, you know there is nothing I can do about it. Mowry’s Davidson family is, of course, nobility, but it’s still a barony. Karendoll’s family is a prestigious county that produced court magicians for generations, but Kaisar is from a duchy. So it’s just impossibly impossible for me.”

“I know that. You definitely know that, and you’re saying it on purpose!”

“You were the first to say something mean, weren’t you, Mowry?”

“I’m sorry.”

It’s true that I was the one who said the nasty things at the start, but that doesn’t mean she has to explain reality to the people who want to escape it.

“So, what are you going to do?”

“No matter what I say, I have to follow… In the first place, as Emily explained earlier, my family, the Davidsons, and theirs are too different in the first place, plus I have two older brothers. I’m already in a state of being my parent’s tool. That’s why it’s so easy for them to decide on such a joke of an engagement.”

I studied hard because I didn’t want to be like that, and I did my best to keep my grades at the top, but when I thought all those efforts were in vain, I lost all my energy.

“Still, I don’t think about reality when I’m reading a book. I just think about what the book says, so it’s a good escape from reality, and that’s why I’m still reading it.”

Even so, I feel crushed by the vague anxiety that unexpectedly came upon me.

“At this point, we can’t just sit around and wait for the situation to resolve itself! You should go directly to Kalendoll and ask her! Why did she go to scum like Kaisar to ask for an engagement!?”

What’s with this drill?

Judging from the drills (hairstyle) that looked like they were rotating at the back of her head, I couldn’t help but notice that she seemed to think it was a good idea.

‘You think it’s somebody else’s problem, and you say whatever you want. I’m gonna yank those drills out of your head.’

I was afraid of the aftermath, so I never said it.
