Today’s chapter is a little long.

***

On God Migration Day even the Elgrandark family servants would be treated to the feast.

Every year, the chefs line up the meals they prepared in the hallway, and the servants who have finished their work were allowed to participate in the banquet. Since the heads of the royal family were called away from the royal palace the servants were able to have a free and easy-going gathering.

If the lights and merriment carry on until the morning but things are picked up and put together neither the Butler Parepantle, Dismiya, and Elysse wouldn’t say anything about it.

The servants that go home for the holiday are given wrapped dishes so they can share them with their families. Of course, there are servants who refuse these dishes and would rather go out to the food stalls in the city.

The servants worked hard to prepare everything and were very busy running around. But overall, there was a feeling of excitement for the end of work and the fun festivities after.

The excitement of the day was in the air, which transferred to the children. Dianna was especially excited, but she had nothing to occupy her.

A knock came from the door, Ilvalino opened it to the butler who announced that a gift had arrived from Tirnoa. A large box was set in the entryway.

Together with Dianna, they opened the box to find rocks that were shaped like the sugar candy “Kompeitō” and were slightly larger than their fists.

A written memo instructed, “Put it in your hand and put magical powder inside”. Together they picked one up and put the magical powder inside.

“Woah! It’s shining!”

In Cain’s palm, Dianna stared in amazement at the stone that was illuminated by a faint light.

Even though it was a gift from Tirnoa, Cain was wary that something weird might happen, but it looked as if it really was just shining.

Cain took one of the stones out of the box and put it in Dianna’s hand, Dianna brows came together in concentration as she tried to gather magical energy from the stone. Then the stone that looked like “Kompeitō” began to shine a light pink.

“It looks like a star.”

It’s a light stone for the god migration. It really does look like a star.”

Ilvalino also picked one up and palmed the stone, the light was a little weaker than Cain and Dianna’s, but it shone a light green.

Thanks to helping Tirnoa with filling the stones with magical light, the three of them had become skilled in concentrating their magical powers.

Cain hung the stone from his canopy and when the bed curtains close it looked like a mini planetarium.

Dianna excitedly kept saying “It’s like a new secret base” but eventually fell sound asleep.

“Dianna has fallen asleep it seems.”

“We are practicing staying up late at night. So, we have woken up late every night thus far. Even so, we haven’t been able to on the date just yet…”

“Well, if you sleep into the evening then wouldn’t you be able to wake up fine tonight?”

“Probably you are right. Should we go to sleep then?”

Dianna rested her head on Cain’s knee, with the shining magical stone in her hand and sighed. While Cain gently combed his hand through her hair while patting her back lightly with the other hand.

Ilvalino left the bed to get a blanket then returned. Dianna was sleeping on top of the futon in the middle of the bed, and he couldn’t put the comforter on the futon. Instead, he put the blanket over Dianna, and she gave a sigh as she turned over.

“What are your plans Ilvalino? Are you going to be in the foyer with the others? Are you going to return to the orphanage? Or are you going to come with us to the royal palace?”

“Well, I am a commoner, and it looks as if Serenosta is returning to the orphanage. If the number of people at the orphanage increases, then the number of treats for everyone decreases. So, after dinner, I am just going to return to my room.”

“Oh, so Serenosta is going back.”

“Yes. He heard there would be a stall and he wanted to sell his handmade goods. It seems he wants to try his hand at selling things.”

“Oh. I would have wanted to see them. So, it seems you can’t go to the orphanage.”

To not wake Dianna Cain and Ilvalino talked in hushed voices.

Cain was relieved that Ilvalino would be staying in the mansion. There are many commoner children who ring the bell in the square. The possibility of the main character going there was high. There shouldn’t be a cut scene of “I met him during at God Migration Day at the orphanage when I was little” but he couldn’t be too careful.

The castle square at night.

Shining magical stones were attached to streetlights and trees, bonfires were lit along the walls, making it look as bright as the daytime. There weren’t any food stalls in the square, but people had gathered after enjoying the festivities in the inner city and were wandering about having lively conversations.

Dianna was lined up in the procession of ringing bells with Cain and Ilvalino, watching the festivities.

Ilvalino was going to return to the mansion, but Dianna had said, “Il! I want you to come with us too!”. So Ilvalino came along.

Even if Ilvalino met the protagonist it wouldn’t be the only sweet memory he had. That was what Cain believed. [Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]

Ilvalino’s route was one where he killed everyone because he had only one gentle memory in his heart while working in the underworld.

The Ilvalino that stood next to him was not the same Ilvalino in the game. It was okay. Cain said to himself.

Cain laughed bitterly at himself because at the end of the day Dianna’s wishes could not be ignored.

“Big brother, Di wants to go to the bathroom.”

Dianna tugged on Cain’s hands a couple of times as she looked up at him. She wore a hat with bunny ears that swayed as she moved, and she looked extremely cute.

It looked like there was still time before the end of the year, but when he looked behind him the line was still long.

“Mister Cain. I will stay in line, please go ahead. It is better to go before the line starts moving.”

As Ilvalino said it he squeezed forward a little so there was a gap that they could squeeze through and get out of the line. Cain nodded and called out to the people in front and back and left the line with Dianna.  I went up to the royal palace gates and showed the guard on duty their aristocratic outfits.

The knight on duty nodded and opened the door to let Dianna and Cain through. Once we were inside, he showed us to the nearest restroom.

“Big brother, you must stay there! You cannot move. If you move, I will hate you!”

“Alright, alright. I will be right here when you get back so hurry up and go.”

I sent Dianna off with a reassuring smile and a little while later he heard a slight shuffle and bustle from further down the hallway.

He was glad they would be able to ring the New Year’s bell. He imagined Dianna’s face when she rang the bell and immediately his expression became dazed.

“Do you know the meaning of the god migration?”

Suddenly, Cain was surprised to hear a voice near him.

He didn’t hear the door open or any other footsteps. There should only be himself and Dianna in that space. Cain turned his gaze to his side and saw a tall woman standing there.

She wore a simple black dress with a black hood. Her eyes and hair were just as black as her clothes. She was staring straight ahead but when she felt Cain’s gaze, she turned to look at him.

“During the god migration, the old god returns to the divine realm, and the new god comes. Isn’t that right?”

“Yes. That is what I was taught.”

The woman in black smiled.

“But no one has seen the gods. Do you believe it? That the goods come from the Divine Realm then return?”

“Well…”

In this country, religion wasn’t important. The God Migration festival gave off the same feeling of Japanese Buddhists who celebrated Halloween and Christmas.

In his previous life, Cain was Japanese but he had thought there might be gods in a world that had magic.

“Do you believe there is another world other than this one?”

Cain was pleased that his expression did not change. From his head he said “Thank you Teacher Cyrus!” three times. Without changing his expression, he tilted his head inquisitively as if he didn’t understand what she was getting at.

“There is a different world from this one. From there to here…let’s call it the soul…can travel. Do you believe that is true?”

Was that a reference to Cain’s previous life? Was this a continuation of the god story?

“For example…”

As the woman in black opened her mouth to say something else the door opened with a bang.

“Big brother! Could you lend me your handkerchief?!”

Cain, startled by the sound of the door, turned his gaze to see Dianna with her soaked hands stretched out in front of her. Cain took a handkerchief from his pocket and went up to Dianna. He looked behind him and the woman wasn’t there anymore.

“Here put your hands out. That is good that you didn’t use your clothing or your cloak to dry your hands. Dianna is being a lady.”

Cain praised her for not using her clothes to dry her hands. He wiped her hands and then put the gloves that were hanging around her neck on her hands.

“Big brother, this handkerchief…”

Dianna gazed at the handkerchief that Cain took out of his pocket. It was embroidered with the Holy Sword Ariad.

“Oh, this! I bought it. Before it went to the store, I gave Ilvalino money and received it! I bought it properly! It was the first thing that Dianna was selling, and I thought I would buy it! With money! I used the money we got from Teach Tirnoa. It was my own money!”

Dianna looked at Cain with gentle eyes. She gently tapped Cain’s shoulder with a pom pom.

“It’s okay. Big Brother it’s not a new thing that you like my things.”

“Dianna…”

Dianna took Cain’s hand and began walking.

“We should hurry and go because Il is waiting for us, Big Brother.”

Seeing his little sister walking so confidently in front of them nearly brought tears to Cain’s eyes.

Cain’s knit hat had floppy ears. Ilvalino’s knit hat had cat ears. Dianna’s gloves had a string running along the back of her neck, and each glove was tied to a string so that they wouldn’t get lost even if they came off.
