Reversed Promise

The surgery was successful.

While trembling with joy, I boot up my smartphone and check the message.

It was the first time in the past few days that I can use my phone because of the surgery and I couldn’t wait to see what kind of messages Toyotomi-kun sent me during that time.

“……eh?”

I froze when I opened up the messaging app.

“None…….not even one…….”

My reward for surviving the surgery was the chat window with old messages I exchanged with Toyotomi-kun before the summer vacation.

I thought the app wasn’t working properly so I shut it down and tried updating it.

However, there was still no new message from Toyotomi-kun.

There were new messages from my parent

Neither my phone nor the app is broken.

And the only thing absent is new messages from Toyotomi-kun.

There were also several messages from my friend Minako.

Her last message only says [Do you want to hang out?].

If I go out to play with Minako then I might miss his messages. Besides, I’m in no mood to play right now.

That was how much I couldn’t think straight.

[Sorry, please leave me alone this summer.]

That might be rude to her but that was the only reply I could give her at the time.

When I thought that I should apologize to her after the vacation, she replied with a [OK] sticker.

Maybe Toyotomi-kun’s just away for the moment.

Maybe he thought that I wouldn’t see his messages anyway so he didn’t send any.

[I was discharged today you know(*´∀`).]

[I want to see you, Toyotomi-kun.]

“……., unread.”

Half a day has passed since I sent those two messages.

However, even though it’s already past midnight, he still hasn’t read them.

“Maybe there’s a reason he doesn’t read my messages……?”

Thinking so, I immediately googled reasons when someone doesn’t read your messages.

The first result that came out was, It’s a [Sign of Affair].

“But, it’s not like I’m dating Toyotomi-kun in the first place……..if we are not dating then he can’t cheat on me right………”

Then why?

Did something happen…….?”

[Toyotomi-kun, what’s wrong? I’m not angry that you didn’t send me any messages you know. I’m just worried about you.]

[You don’t have to send me a reply. But can you please at least read my messages?]

[Do you want to go shopping together? We can just walk around the city too you know.]

[I want to meet you.]

[It’s been hot these days isn’t it. It makes you crave something like ice cream right.]

[I saw a new taiyaki place opening in the neighboring town on the tv yesterday. Do you want to go together?]

[The fireworks festival is the day after tomorrow. Do you still remember our promise? You don’t have to come but please give me a reply.]

[The fireworks festival is tomorrow! I will invite Minako instead you know.]

[I can hear the fireworks outside.]

[School will start soon. I usually feel bummed out seeing the vacation end but I’m looking forward to seeing Toyotomi-kun there again.]

[Please, give me a reply.]

[Just reading them is enough.]

[I love you.]

[Please go out with me.]

[Toyotomi-kun.]

Before I knew it, my daily routine had become sending him a message.

Even if it’s the reverse of our promise, I don’t mind.

[I beg you. Tomorrow is the last day, let’s go to the movie together! You can come whenever you want! I’m sending you the location. I will be waiting okay.]

“…….he’s not here.”

I’ve been waiting since morning.

I’ve seen dozens of families entering and leaving the theater.

I’ve seen many couples on a date as well.

If, Toyotomi-kun was among them then maybe I could have given up.

“Ahh……that’s right, I could have just called him the whole time huh………I didn’t want to bother him but since this is the last day, it should be fine right.”

The ringback tone kept ringing.

My first call was unanswered so I called him again.

Then, the ringing suddenly stopped.

“T, Toyotomi-kun!?”

[[Sorry, the person you’re trying to reach may not be within our service area or that their phone currently is switched off]]

Toyotomi-kun didn’t even answer the phone.

“It’s already dark huh…….”

It’s already time for late-night screenings.

But Toyotomi-kun still isn’t here.

Then, I received a call from my mother.

[[School’s starting tomorrow right, come back home. Or are you feeling sick?]]

“I’m sorry, I got lost. I will call a taxi.”

I’ve been feeling sick the entire summer.

I think I’m starting to hate Toyotomi-kun, just a little.
