Chapter 196 CH 190: SHOCK

Los Angeles— often hailed as the city that never slept and true to that name, even at the late hours of the night, on the asphalt that ran throughout the entirety of the city, it was possible to see a large activity as cars buzzed and honked on the road, carrying people that were traveling to accomplish their tasks on this world.

Sitting comfortably in the back seat of her car while her secretary expertly maneuvered through the roads of the lively city, she found herself slowly drifting to sleep as the effect of alcohol started to kick in. Her mind had become slightly groggy, but she barely managed to keep herself awake by thinking about the night she had spent on the illustrious bar known as 'The Wild Hunt.'

She didn't really know what she had expected when entering that place at first. In her mind, when thinking of the hosting business she could only imagine the so called hosts being hookers who sold their bodies to others for quick cash while the establishments that ran these sorts of businesses being riddled with drugs, cheap and trashy alcohol, and flashy vulgar music that could only attract shoddy people to its doors.

However, once she made up her mind to experience it for herself, what she had been greeted with was completely different from anything she had ever imagined. It was an elegant estate, a calm interior full of cultured young men who were in no way close to the word 'vulgar.' It was a place riddled with charming people who entertained their clients with their charismatic presence.

That alone had been enough to impress her to no end. She felt like she had walked into an English salon and she could see how these kinds of places could be very useful for business discussion. After all, she had many clients who were women and visiting this establishment with them in tow could definitely help them relax their minds and enjoy themselves which could serve to deliver her an upper hand on the deals.

It was sad that even in a place where she came to enjoy herself, she was forced to think about her job. It was a truly saddening fact that she could do nothing about. But such thoughts did not last in her mind for long as she reminisced about a man shrouded in mysteries and intrigue.

Cinder— The mysterious masked young man who had served as her host had been more than just an intriguing encounter for her. Just meeting with him was enough to make this visit of hers a fruitful event. Why wouldn't it?

He was a very charming and witty fellow that she immediately felt a connection with. Moreover, while he didn't seem to be of high birth, he had clearly received a good education and knew how to listen to others and speak accordingly.

How long had it been since she last enjoyed such a discussion? In her mind, this kind of thing only happened when she was with Adam and Cecilia. No one else could ever invoke such satisfaction inside of her from a mere conversation alone.

Now though, a third person was added to this list and it was someone she did not even know the face of. What an irony it was…

'Life is truly filled with so many surprises.'

She had gone to the club with a hint of resignation— a simple desire to do something bad at least once in her life. Something that she would perhaps regret in the future but even then something that was wholly hers, something that she would definitely enjoy, and something that was at least a fraction different than her usual boring life.

But she had found something much, much more interesting than the simple, casual, and definitely meaningless sex that she once had in her mind.

'Perhaps I should go there another time?'

What was supposed to be a simple and single outing was slowly shaping to become more of a recurring event for her.

Was it a bad thing that she was so interested to visit such an establishment for a second time? She didn't really know. But wasn't it what people found out through trial and error? The insecurity and the lack of knowledge about the outcome even though you committed greatly to something was something that could also lead to something enjoyable.

This fear and anxiety of uncertainty also brought with it a certain exhilarating feeling in the pit of her stomach that was hard to brush off. A mixture between fear, excitement, and curiosity was the content of the emotions that were churning within her at this moment.

It was then…

"We are being followed, Madam."

Shuri's mind immediately sobered up and she sat up with a straight and taut posture. She said nothing as she rummaged through her seat to take out two handguns and put one in her purse. She also pulled out some spraying bombs from one of the compartments of her car and she activated the tracker that was connected to her phone. This would send an SOS signal to her security team.

For now, the signal was only yellow. But if nothing was done to stop it, it would become red very fast.

For security, the tracking chips were in reality one of her hearing devices. Once this was done, Shuri nodded to her driver.

Shuri was a very successful lawyer. One did not reach the height she was able to reach without ruffling a few feathers and she was someone that had ruffled more than just a few feathers in the path of her ascension to her current status.

She had caused the death, incarceration, and loss of property for many people she had fought against in the open court.

She would have no complaints even if she was sent to hell. But even though this was the case she did not really mean that she would let herself die without putting up a fight.

It was necessary to always be prepared for as many possibilities as possible.

Suddenly, the car moved violently as someone else came toward them in full force and crashed against them.

Shuri was surprised when she realized that she felt basically no trembles or shakes even though the car was moving so violently across the road. The car may be bulletproof, but it didn't have anti-shock capabilities of this magnitude.

'I wonder who they are?'

Was it perhaps the Mafia? She had been slowly cutting her relationship with them. After all, she had always been careful about never truly breaking the law and the few mafioso she had protected had relatively clean records. She had made sure of that before taking them as her clients.

Still, as she wanted to let Adam inherit a clean group she had limited the money that was sent by them.

'I doubt it is them.'

The mafia at the upper echelons was anything but mindless. They would never bring such terror for no reason without giving a chance for reconciliation.

If it was not the crime lords, then it only left her to think about her personal enemies. Most likely, someone was hired to mess with her.

"Just what the hell is happening exactly?'
