Chapter 136 136 – The City’s Square

The demon captives and that one human follower of Vorn are paraded around the city. People came out of their homes or workplaces to see what was happening.

"That's the prophet." One of the boys whispered.

"She's so beautiful." His friend answered.

A girl chimed in. "I want to be like her!"

People's attention was actually focused on Velvet rather than the prisoners. They whispered, and some even shouted love to her.

From the start, Velvet was uncomfortable with that kind of attention. She wanted to live quietly without their interference from every corner.

Not to mention she must always maintain her public image. She was leading a group of captives and soldiers guarding them. Many times that woman has to keep her head from lowering while at the same time holding herself back from yawning.

She must always look strong. If she fell from the horse, people would think too far. They will assume it's a bad omen.

After quite a long time of the parade, they finally arrived at the capital's square. Velvet jumped off the horse, and Candice came up to her.

"You have to drink this, or you will really collapse from exhaustion and sleepiness." The mage whispered while holding out a vial filled with clear liquid. "I've changed it to look like water, so people don't get suspicious."

There have been reports of people being addicted to pain-reducing or stamina-boosting potions. So, those substances are also prohibited for consumption by God's servants.

"Thanks, but I'm fine." Velvet smiled faintly. "I'm going to rest after this."

Candice was about to argue back but looked sadly at her friend instead. Velvet climbed onto the wooden stage, approaching the prisoners already kneeling there.

She looked at the people gathered in the vast land, took a breath, then spoke in a loud voice. "Ladies and gentlemen! These demons have infiltrated our lives and want to corrupt our morals! This shows Vorn's influence is already very strong in society!"

Velvet took a pause, and none of the visitors responded. They all listened in awe of her.

"And, of course, they should be punished. This is the day of execution that God has chosen!" She continued. "And even though these are evil creatures, God still has mercy on them! They will still be killed as quickly as possible, almost painlessly! This is proof of the greatness of God…."

The prophet's words were cut off because someone threw something at her. She caught the object, which broke as soon as she held it.

That woman checked the palm of her hand and found the crushed eggshell with its contents which smelled very bad.

"Go back to your country, bitch!" The thrower, a teenage boy, cursed. "We don't need you here!"

"Vorn can give us more happiness!" An old woman chimed in from another location. "He brought me to my dead daughter!"

"Let them go! They are our saviors!" A man came up onto the stage, and soldiers pushed him down.

Protests erupted more, accompanied by people throwing more rotten eggs. Some even threw feces. The guard soldiers are busy chasing the dissidents, sparking chaos.

People ran away in panic. Some of them fell and were trampled.

"Calm down, all of you!" Velvet screamed with all her might, but the chaos was too big to stop. "You are hurting yourselves! Please, listen to me!!!"

Realizing that her words were useless, Velvet drew her sword and started executing the prisoners. It could be that this mess is Vorn's doing, and someone will come to save them.

"All hail, lord Vorn! He's our true savior!!!" The only human woman among the captives screamed at the top of her lungs. "He who will lead us to glory!"

And Velvet stabbed the woman in the back.

[Vorn's POV]

"We continue to observe the execution from afar, my lord." One of the shapeshifters in the capital reported via the long-distance communication feature. "We can't see clearly, but even the prophet seems panicking."

"Good." I leaned back against the throne. Normally I would smile when I received a report like this. But the possibility of the antidote failing to be made kept haunting me. "Now, the prophet's morale will surely decline. Not all the people of this kingdom support her, it turns out."

Yeah, I'm gonna break that woman. This is only the beginning.

"Keep an eye on the situation. Keep your distance from the prophet. And forgive me. Your comrades became victims. Believe me, I don't want this either." I continued.

"It's all right, my lord. After all, this is our job."

There's a reason I asked those shapeshifters to maintain the appearance of the person they're impersonating. Even when they're about to be executed. This is to send a message that my influence has gone far, even to the soldiers and nobility.

They will be suspicious of each other, which can lead to friction. Especially when the prophet who could check on the demons wasn't there.

"Goodbye then, carry on with your duties."

"Very well, my lord."

After the call ended, I looked at my generals, who were already standing in front of me, minus Xenora and Emily. They were still escorting the carriage carrying the scientists.

"This is the time you and your comrades to shine, Ritor," I said to the minotaur. "You guys will march to the farthest points of the area we already control. Maybe all of you will face the prophet's troops there. Sorry, I can't get a definite point. We no longer have intelligence in the military division of Durcia kingdom."

Ritor wore an enthusiastic smile. "It doesn't matter, my lord. The important thing is that we can finally fight after all this time."

"You guys will be divided into three groups." I rise from the throne. "There are a few succubus and shapeshifters that will accompany you. Smash all their troops, but don't kill the prophet. I still want to play with her."

"I will carry out the order as well as possible, your majesty." Ritor bowed to me.

Wait, Velvet. You will see my greatness and surely fall at my feet.
