98 Inaudible Scream

With the humanoid demons arriving on the beach at the edge of the island, Blake kept his eyes open wide and watched every single one of their movements.

It just didn’t make sense to him why someone like Vera, his teacher, a humanoid demon that came from a deeper demon realm would even fear the humanoid demons from the first realm.

He didn’t know what happened to her strength as she said to him before that creatures from the deeper realm couldn’t just exist in the upper realms naturally.

Fighting all 25 of them at the same time was impossible in Blake’s mind.

However, Blake himself was quite confident that if he were to fight them with a meticulous strategy, separating them into smaller groups, then he would definitely be able to reap the 25 souls away from their bodies.

And seeing things solely from the intelligence perspective, Blake would bet all the souls that he had ever eaten in his lifetime that Vera would be able to outsmart the humanoid demons from this realm.

Heck, he was even sure that there was no way the humanoid demons could even locate her house that was inside an isolated space that needed special runes to be drawn as the key to open the space.

Hence why the question that he had was, ‘Why Vera was so wary of them?’ Still holds a very huge question mark that Blake was dying to know the reason of.

Upon getting their boats stuck on the shallow waters close to the island, the five humanoid demons began to descend from their sailboats, and soon all 25 of them had gathered on the beach.

.....

Blake was still quite far away from them and he could only see their movements without knowing the details.

And two things that he was able to recognize from that distance were that the humanoid demons were not disorganized barbarians and in fact, they had a leading figure among them.

Once they all descended from their sailboats, one humanoid demon started shouting something before all the other 24 humanoid demons made their way into the beach, orderly, and stopped after they went out of the water, with their faces turned towards the leader’s direction.

Blake’s distance from them was too far away for him to be able to hear anything audible to his ears remembering that it already took him quite an effort to be able to understand the humanoid demons’ words that were half gibberish.

At first, Blake didn’t think too much about what the leader of the humanoid demons was talking about remembering the brownish demon that only said a few words every now and then, and it was only a form of command about what they should do, it wouldn’t matter to him what the commands for the 24 humanoid demons were.

However, after the talking went on for more than 2 whole minutes, Blake began to feel that things weren’t as simple as he had thought.

Just remembering how hard and how much effort it was for the brownish demon to utter a single complete sentence from his mouth, then for a humanoid demon to be talking for more than two whole minutes was something that was very unusual in his mind.

Blake was about to try and get closer to them, going to the very edge of the forest to try his luck to hear the words that came out of the leader of the humanoid demons.

But before he was able to move his body and feet off of the tree branch, Blake suddenly stopped as he finally noticed a movement from the group of humanoid demons.

The 24 humanoid demons that were listening closely to what their leader was talking were all huddled up together.

But after the leader stopped talking, one of the humanoid demons came out from the group and started walking closer to the forest.

Blake was ready to go into the retreat path that he had planned out beforehand and go pick up Robus before running back to Vera’s isolated space and told her with his own mouth about what he just saw.

But in the end, Blake decided against that as he saw the humanoid demon stop walking closer to the forest about 20 meters away from the tree that was located at the very edge of the forest.

As the humanoid demon got close enough to Blake’s location, he could finally see the details and features the humanoid demon had.

Just like the other demons that had unique physical appearances, the skin of the humanoid demon was reddish in color.

And the unique physical feature that the humanoid demon had that was very apparent was none other than the bat-like ears that were about 20 centimeters long and the bat-like wings that were connected from its back to its arms.

Blake wondered what the unique-looking demon was about to do, just standing there and looking blankly at the forest, but he would soon find his answer.

Blake saw the bat-like humanoid demon take a deep breath that filled the air in its lungs and made its belly visibly protrude.

And before Blake was able to figure out what the humanoid demon wanted to do, the bat-like humanoid demon opened its mouth and released all the air contained in its body.

Blake saw the bat-like humanoid demon’s gesture as if it was releasing a scream.

But Blake wasn’t able to hear anything, so his thoughts began to churn.

‘What is it doing, why did it try to scream? But why was there no sound? Did it just simply take deep breaths?’

Blake tried to think of several possible reasons about what the bat-like humanoid demon was doing that he didn’t realize that the bat-like humanoid demon had taken another deep breath and was ready to ‘scream’ once again, but this time, in a different direction.

More precisely, in his direction.

The Bat-like humanoid demon released another inaudible scream in Blake’s direction, but because Blake couldn’t hear anything and he was still busy with his thoughts, Blake decided to just stay still in place while watching the bat-like humanoid demon closely.

‘I still didn’t understand why it would do such a thing... Is it some kind of screaming attack or something else? Am I missing something here?’

‘Why would a bat-like humanoid demon take deep breaths and make a screaming gesture without actually screaming?’

Blake was still stuck on the fact that a creature might be stupid enough to do something so unnecessary and thought that it might be an unknown ritual that the humanoid demons do before exploring a place.

His mind was clouded with the fact that the humanoid demons weren’t even able to speak properly and their intelligence wasn’t anything noteworthy when he met them for the first time that Blake’s mind wasn’t working properly.

But then it finally clicked in his mind.

‘A bat-like humanoid demon released an inaudible scream...’

‘Bats are known as nocturnal creatures that hunt their prey at night. Their eyesight was as good as a human’s, but they didn’t rely on them to hunt prey.’

‘What they used was....’

‘Echolocation.’

And right as the realization dawned on him, Blake finally heard the scream coming from the bat-like humanoid demon.

But this time, the scream was very audible that it caught the attention of the other 24 humanoid demons as the bat-like humanoid demon used its limb to point in one precise direction, his direction.

Seeing and knowing what that meant, a thought came to his mind.

‘Ah, shit.’
