Chapter 69 Those Goddamn Eyes!

"Woo!" (I'm vetoing that one.)

Amidst a sea of dubious plans, Jack was the "woo" or reason.

Steal people's stuff to bring them here? They only end up ganged upon and beaten to death! As for the various attack plans, they all seemed to ignore the disparity in strength.

"Woo!" (Keep in mind that we're facing smart humans!)

Jack reminded them once more. Their targets had been popping Potions like junkies on a Monday afternoon. By now, their Health and Mana would be full for sure.

In contrast, his fellow foxes were a sore sight to behold: Injuries, Mana Deficiency, and tongues hanging out from an exhausting, drawn-out chase.

Yet, he could sense their anxiety. They would never forgive themselves if they let the ones that had attacked their Master get away. This meant retreating wasn't an option.

Thus Jack gathered his fellow foxes.

"Woo!" (Listen up, it's time to out-fox them!)

He began laying out the plan he had just come up with, the others drinking every one of his words. They even praised his "Master-like" smarts, impressed to no end.

Yet, Jack didn't care. He simply helped for one reason: the sooner they dealt with those pesky assassins, the sooner they could go back to running around the City.

"Woo!" (Everyone understood? Good, let's do this then!)

His fellow foxes spread out. It was time for chaos…

.

.

.

In the alley walked three disguised assassins:

"Tch— We never should have taken this bloody mission!"

"Shut up. We knew it'd be hard from the start. After all, the place was freaking crawling with Dawn Lords. At least we're alive and got some crazy valuable info."

"Sigh. Stay strong. We're almost there. Just gotta keep containing that Water Tracking Spell that weak bastard put on us. We don't want the Water Lord to find us…."

What had seemed like a clean get-away hadn't been that clean after all. Once the Space Seal had gone down, the SOS the Water Lord's Nephew had sent had finally activated.

They were marked and would need a specialist to eliminate that annoyance. Luckily, as assassins, they were very adept at temporarily neutralizing it.

But, just as it seemed like everything would be fine…

"Wait, something's wrong?!" An assassin exclaimed in shock.

The once deserted streets had become utterly dead. Even in the dead of night, there should have been one or two passersby! They stopped, their hair rising in dread.

"Don't tell me… it's an ambush?!" Their instinct was screaming at them to take their legs and run. Yet, everything was too quiet… perhaps a little too quiet.

That's when it happened…

"Ke-ke-ke-ke!" It started as softly as a murmur in the wind, but it gradually crescendoed until all they could hear was that weird creepy laugh.

"Take a formation! Someone's here!" An assassin ordered, his legs trembling.

Had this been any other time, he would have simply laughed about it and perhaps even continued walking peacefully… but after the earlier events, their nerves were a wreck.

This was but the start...

In the darkness, tons of glowing yellow eyes appeared.

They felt like harbingers of death as they eyed the three assassins. Those gazes could strip them back to the terrified kids they had been at the start of their assassin training.

It was even worse for one especially.

The gaze of a predator, but not just any. It showed a power that an animal shouldn't have possessed. It was the gaze of a King, one that towered above all other lifeforms.

"Kekekeke." As it laughed, they felt its disdain.

Trying to run? They had managed to run so far only because it had allowed it. All along, they had been in its grasp, mere playthings to it! Compared to it, they were NOTHING!

Jack did his best "Badass" stare.

But, there seemed to be something wrong with the humans. Why had they pissed themselves? Why were they trembling? Had the chilly night wind frozen their brains?

That's when they stopped trembling, anger overcoming their fear.

"You bastard! Looking down on us! DIE!" With a shout, they hurled magic projectiles! They HAD to extinguish those eyes! As long as they existed, they would be doomed!

Jack instantly turned tail.

What the heck was wrong with those humans? He had planned to have his fellow foxes annoy them until the assassins went wild… but wasn't this a little too soon?! #Humans

He rushed to safety, their spells crashing on a nearby house.

"D-Did we get it? It's dead right?"

"Careful, stay on guard!"

"THERE!"

That's when the eyes reappeared, all of them! The humans adopted a defensive formation, Jack rejoicing: the warier, the better! After all, he had already sent a fox to get reinforcements.

A bloodied fox would reach the nearest Dawn Garrison, begging them for help. With some luck, the assassins would be arrested for being suspicious, which beat them escaping.

This should be a satisfying outcome, right?

"Woo!" (Keep scaring them! It's working!)

Jack encouraged the others. Every time glowing eyes made it near the enemies, they'd reply with a well-timed spell, the poor foxes barely escaping with their lives.

Still, the more the humans attacked, the more damage they caused the Town! As long as they kept this up, the Dawn Guard would definitely arrest them! It was PERFECT!

But just as Jack was rejoicing…. The battlefield suddenly stilled. For some reason, the Moon had disappeared?! Foxes and assassins slowly raised their heads toward the sky.

There should have been clouds, stars, and perhaps even birds, but the scene awaiting them was far too surreal and shocking. In the sky was a whale, one entirely made out of water.

Atop it was a well-dressed gentle-looking man… but the light in his eyes was anything but gentle. It was akin to a raging sea about to explode with resentment.

"I finally found you! You foolish lot tried to kill my Nephew, eh?"

"Gulp! W-Water Lord?!" How had he even found them?!

... Only then did the assassins realize the damage they had caused while trying to get rid of "those eyes". On a scale of 1 to 10, they were FUCKED!

That's when the sky seemed to fall…
