1033 Unexpected Call 1

As the warm sun continued to hover in the sky, Xi Xiaye's tone turned cheery compared to her gloom earlier.

\"I'll do my best not to disappoint you, but you wanted to investigate this…\" Inspector Zhang gave her a glance and stopped his sentence midway.

Understanding what he meant, she took a deep breath as she looked at the golden fields. \"You should've noticed the importance of this information. I don't know what else I can do, so I want to try my best.\"

\"I didn't expect the truth to be something like this. I understand your concern.\"

Xi Xiaye felt like her burden had been lifted slightly. \"I'm getting sick of the rumors and gossip. I always knew that rumors could be really scary, and now I can truly feel the impact of it.\"

\"That's the power of rumors. Try to get over it,\" he replied humorously.

Xi Xiaye took a look at the time and noticed it was getting late. \"It's not that easy. Otherwise, there wouldn't be so many tragedies around the world. Alright, I suppose I should take my leave, I still need to head over to Glory World, I'll leave this matter in your hands. Do call me anytime if you need anything or if there are any updates. Goodbye!\"

Inspector Zhang let out a puff and nodded as he waved as Xi Xiaye turned around and left the field. \"Goodbye!\"

\"Go to Glory World Corporation,\" Xi Xiaye said as she got into the car.

\"Yes, CEO Xi!\" the driver replied and quickly got the car going.

She leaned her arm on the window as she rested her head on her shoulder. Then, she closed her eyes and took a short nap.

The car swiftly entered the city and headed right towards Glory World Corporation.

Xi Xiaye was only sleeping lightly. Because she did not take a break in the afternoon and rushed through her documents, she was feeling sleepy right now. If not for the phone call that interrupted her nap in the car, she would have fallen sound asleep.

\"Hello?\" Xi Xiaye quickly took out her phone and answered it without looking at the caller's name.

\"Xiaye—\" the person uttered her name after some time.

Xi Xiaye woke up instantly when she heard this voice! Cold, distant, but a little familiar. Who else could it be aside Han Yifeng? Why was he calling?

She had forgotten when was the last time she had spoken to him. She only knew a little about him from Su Nan who mentioned that she had seen him and his son.

\"Han Yifeng...is that you?\" Xi Xiaye frowned slightly.

Han Yifeng chuckled. \"It's me. I can sense that you're pretty surprised.\"

Xi Xiaye's expression froze. She did not reply as she was not sure what to say or why he was calling.

Han Yifeng probably guessed what she was thinking as he explained himself, \"Don't worry. I just called because I heard from a friend working in Hospital T that you were hospitalized due to some injuries. Are you alright?\"

They had not contacted each other ever since Han Yifeng's sudden departure the last time, so the sudden call caught her off guard. She then replied, \"I'm fine. Thank you for your concern, CEO Han.\"

Her tone sounded distant and was not very pleasant to Han Yifeng's ears. He took a pause and then said, \"That's great. There were many times I wanted to give you a call to ask how you have been ever since I got here, but things got busy and I forgot. Anyway, it's great that you're doing well.\"

\"Thank you for your concern.\" Xi Xiaye considered telling him about Su Nan and Ruan Heng being in Boston, but she then felt it was not necessary.

\"Did Xinyi...cause you any more trouble?\"

It had been a long time since that name rang in Xi Xiaye's ears. Her conflict with Xi Xinyi had somehow died down after Han Yifeng left. Apart from that time when Xi Xinyi begged her to persuade Han Yifeng, they had been leading their own separate lives.

\"Not really. I heard from Father that she's doing pretty well. She just misses her child quite a fair bit, and you...she once asked me to persuade you to give her a chance, but I declined her back then though I do understand her feelings as a mother. Are you really not going to give her another chance?\" Xi Xiaye said honestly.

There was a long silence on Han Yifeng's end. He did not answer Xi Xiaye's question and only replied when Xi Xiaye almost hung up. \"We can't go back to how it was like before again. My feelings for her were exhausted. I feel good living a life free of desires over here.\"

Xi Xiaye then replied, \"There's no way humans can live absolutely free of desires. Even saints long for the path of truth. Forget about the past.\" With that, she hung up and took a deep breath. She looked out of the window as she put on a tiny grin that grew into a complicated-looking smile.
