Chapter 380 - A Collective Challenge

Qin Haodong thought for a long time but still didn’t find the key to the problem.

When Nalan Wuxia saw that he was silent, she asked, “What are you thinking?”

Qin Haodong said, “I seem to have found the key to the case, but I can’t figure it out.”

Nalan Wuxia said, “We also need luck to solve the case. Go back and rest first. You can continue to investigate at Guangren Hospital tomorrow. I think the key is there.”

Qin Haodong nodded and changed to Tang Feng again. Then, he went back to the hotel, where he lived.

The next day, Qin Haodong went to Guangren Hospital to work and noticed that there were two more nurses there. It seemed that the hospital had sent them to work at the traditional Chinese medicine department.

After seeing Qin Haodong, Hua Zian said, “Young fellow, I’ll leave it to you today. I have something to do.

I used to be the only doctor here and I had to stay in the hospital all day. Now, you can finally do that for me. I am going to visit my grandson.”

What he said was true. In the past, he had been the only doctor in the traditional Chinese medicine department. In order not to let the department close, he had stayed there every day.

The old man did not wait for Qin Haodong to agree. He packed his things directly and left.

As he looked at Hua Zian’s back, Qin Haodong was amused. He had been in the hospital for a long time. He could give the old man a few days off.

He made a pot of tea by himself and sat in front of the consulting room, waiting for the patients to come. However, he didn’t see any patients, only seven or eight people in white coats. Some of them had gloomy faces, some looked contemptuous, and some looked at him with funny faces. In other words, it seemed that they hadn’t gone there with the right intention.

Qin Haodong took a sip of tea, looked at these people and said, “Do you want to see a doctor? If you do, you need to register first.”

“We are doctors,” a short, fat, middle-aged doctor said, “Besides, traditional Chinese medicine is a trick used to deceive people. Even if we wanted to see a doctor, we would not have come here.”

Qin Haodong frowned slightly. He was sure that these people were looking for trouble.

“This is the consulting room of the traditional Chinese medicine department. Why did you come here if you don’t want to see a doctor?”

The short, fat man said, “First, I’d like to introduce you to Director Zhang from the dermatological department, Director Li from the respiratory department, Director Zhao from the digestive system department, and Director Zhou from the andrology department. I’m Director Dong Kai from the anorectal department.”

Dong Kai raised his chin and spoke proudly, as if they were all medical experts and Qin Haodong should regard them with reverence.

After his introduction, Qin Haodong’s expression changed significantly. Before Dong Kai became complacent, he heard Qin Haodong say, “You’re the director of the anorectal department? No wonder you’re so smelly. Do you keep your mouth open while treating patients?”

“Uh…”

Dong Kai almost choked on his own saliva. Qin Haodong’s words were really acerbic.

“You…”

Dong Kai’s face blushed, but he was pulled behind by director Zhang from the dermatology department, who was beside him.

“Your name is Tang Feng, right? We didn’t come here for a squabble today.”

Qin Haodong said lightly, “Whatever. You can fight or squabble. As long as you can, I will accompany you to the very end.”

Of course, he naturally did not have a good attitude towards these troublemakers.

Director Li from the dermatological department said, “Tang Feng, what’s up with your attitude? We are all chief doctors of the hospital. We are your predecessors. You should treat us with respect when you see us!”

Qin Haodong said, “Well, don’t talk about useless things. What are you going to do? I think you know that you are not worthy of my respect.”

Director Zhao from the digestive system department said, “Since you said that, we will be straightforward. Today, we came here to inform you that traditional Chinese medicine is unscientific. We want you to resign on your own initiative and close the department of traditional Chinese medicine. Don’t bring shame on Guangzhou Hospital.”

Director Zhou from the andrology department said, “I know that yesterday you happened to give a patient a dose of traditional Chinese medicine and help complete an operation, but that has nothing to do with traditional Chinese medicine. It’s our western medicine doctors that saved the patient. Your black medicine soup didn’t work at all.”

These doctors were the backbone and core strength of Guangren Hospital. Like Lu Fei, these people boycotted traditional Chinese medicine and often shouted that the hospital should ban the traditional Chinese medicine department.

They had heard that there was a new doctor in the traditional Chinese medicine consulting room who had accomplished a great success in the operating room yesterday, which had made them feel very dissatisfied. Thus, they had come to the traditional Chinese medicine department’s consulting room today to provoke him collectively.

Qin Haodong’s face was completely gloomy. These people didn’t understand traditional Chinese medicine at all. After learning western medicine, they had started to shout that traditional Chinese medicine was unscientific and they wanted to ban it.

Director Zhang said again, “Tang Feng, you don’t have to be unhappy. We just came here to teach you a truth. Traditional Chinese medicine is a pseudoscience.

You should be well-educated. Think about it. We all treat illnesses and save lives. The Western medicine system has dozens of disciplines, and the medical experts in each discipline specialize in that field. According to your traditional Chinese medicine system, a doctor can cure all kinds of diseases. How is that possible? Chinese medicine practitioners have wide knowledge but are not experts.”

Director Li said, “The Western medicine system has countless scientific instruments to perform all kinds of tests on patients. We can make an accurate diagnosis and choose the right treatment. The diagnosis of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner is a trick to deceive people.”

“What you call channels and Qi are not real. This is totally a pseudoscience. Can you show me a channel or an acupoint?”

“It’s a great joke that your herbs, grass roots, and bark can cure diseases. Nowadays, developed countries prohibit traditional Chinese medicine. You have no conscience if you fool the people here.”

The people around Qin Haodong depreciated traditional Chinese medicine one after another, as if they were representing science and justice.

While looking at these doctors, who acted just like clowns, Qin Haodong suddenly lost any interest in arguing with them. There was nothing to say to these people, who didn’t understand traditional Chinese medicine.

When they were finished, he said lightly, “Are you finished? Please go out!”

“You…”

These people had spoken for a long time, but Qin Haodong hadn’t reacted. It seemed like they had fought with empty air. It was useless.

Suddenly, a middle-aged man in his 50s appeared in front of the consulting room. Upon seeing so many doctors, he felt a little confused and asked, “Excuse me, is this consulting room of traditional Chinese medicine? I want to see a doctor.”

The two young nurses who had been standing by silently did not dare to participate in the debate between the doctors. However, when they saw the patient, they went over to him and said, “Yes, this is the traditional Chinese medicine department. Please come in.”

The middle-aged man stepped into the room. However, before he could approach Qin Haodong, Dong Kai stopped him and said, “What’s wrong with you?”

“My stomach is uncomfortable. I haven’t been able to eat for several days,” said the middle-aged man while pressing his stomach.

Dong Kai said, “A stomach disease is not a small matter. I advise you to go through a scientific examination. Western medicine is much better than traditional Chinese medicine in this respect. Director Zhao of the digestive system department happens to be here. He is an expert at treating stomach disease at our hospital. He can treat you.”

The middle-aged man hesitated and said, “But I came to see a Chinese medicine practitioner…”

Director Zhao approached him and said, “Brother, you need to believe in science. How can you be treated by a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner? Do you think he can find your problem by touching your wrist? Can he treat your stomach disease by pricking you with needles? Or do you think smelly, bitter traditional Chinese medicine soup tastes better?

I’m responsible, so I have to tell you that a stomach disease must be examined systematically to determine if your stomach has a tumor, canceration, or inflammation. That way, we can distinguish what the disease is and systematically use drugs to fundamentally cure it.”

“Oh! Well, okay then!” The middle-aged man nodded, as though he was frightened by Director Zhao’s words.

“Tell me about your symptoms!”

The middle-aged man said, “I just have a stomachache. I have no appetite, so I don’t want to eat anything.”

Director Zhao said, “Is the pain severer within an hour after the meal? Does it gradually ease afterward?”

The middle-aged man nodded. “Yes, that’s it.”

“I can basically diagnose your illness as a gastric ulcer. Go to the digestive system department for a systematic examination to see if there are any other possibilities, and I will confirm the treatment plan you need to follow later.”

“Okay, thank you, doctor!”

The middle-aged man left the traditional Chinese medicine department after speaking and went to the digestive system department.

Dong Kai proudly looked at Qin Haodong and said, “You see? Patients’ eyes are bright. His final choice was science.”

He thought that Qin Haodong must be angry that he had asked the patient to leave the traditional Chinese medicine department. However, he still looked indifferent and did not react.

They didn’t know that, in Qin Haodong’s eyes, treating diseases was a kind of fate. The man had just chosen western medicine and missed the treatment of Emperor Green Wood. It was the middle-aged man’s loss. He wouldn’t be angry about something like that.

Just as the experts felt at a loss, a 30-year-old man appeared in front of them.

The young man glanced at them after walking through the door and said, “Doctors, I’m a computer programmer. Recently, my cervical spondylosis has become increasingly serious and I feel dizzy and nauseous. Who can help me?”

Director Sun from the orthopedics department approached and said, “Young man, since you are a computer programmer, you must know a bit about science. How can you seek a Chinese medicine practitioner when you are ill? You should go see a Western medicine doctor.”

The young man hesitated slightly. He had never seen a doctor like director Sun. “I heard that the massage of traditional Chinese medicine is very effective in relieving cervical spondylosis, so I came here to have a try,” he said.

“There is no scientific basis behind this statement. Cervical vertebra is a dense area of nerves. Never massage it at will. If you see an unreliable doctor, it will sometimes lead to aggravation of the disease or even lifelong paralysis.”

Then, he pointed at Qin Haodong impolitely and said, “He is the doctor of the traditional Chinese medicine department. He just started to work at the hospital the day before yesterday and he is 30 years old. Would you dare let him massage you?”

“I…” The young man took a look at Qin Haodong and realized Qin Haodong was younger than him. He suddenly lost his confidence and said, “Well, I’d better go see a western medicine doctor.”

As soon as he said that, he left the traditional Chinese medicine department.

After persuading the patient to leave, director Sun turned to Qin Haodong, thinking that Qin Haodong would react. However, Qin Haodong was not angry. On the contrary, he had a faint smile on his face.

He picked up the cup and took a sip before he smiled and said, “Experts and chief directors, thank you for coming here to help me treat the patients. I’m a little sorry that I get paid by the hospital without having to work!”
