- Ernestine Ulmer

It was that time of the year.

The morning started off windy. The sun hid behind a wall of clouds, letting a few rays of sun to cast a faint light onto the street.

It should have made one felt relaxed as they enjoyed the weather. However, this could not be said for the people in the Kang Company. The people in the office felt restless and nervous, as they sought to impress their supervisors and colleagues with their hard work. The feeling of anxiety and tension filled the air. People came rushing in and out of the offices, trying to finish their work before deadlines.

The sound of feet shuffling can be heard all over the room, with people chattering, a tone of strained apprehension in their voices. The people began to chew on their pens and tapping their shoes, making the pressure to become slightly unbearable.

However, this did not apply to Delilah, who was languidly sitting in her cubicle, playing with her phone and scrolling through her social media. Her cheek on top of one arm as she lazily laid on the table.

Firah, who was in the cubicle next to her, peered around to look at her and asked, "Whatcha doing?"

Delilah looked up and back down again at her phone. "Nothing much. Am going to play my games after this."

Firah narrowed her eyes at Delilah and asked in confusion, "Aren't you worried about the appraisal?"

Delilah shrugged.

Just then, the phone on her table rang.

Delilah quickly picked it up, with her head still on the table and answered, "Delilah here."

"Hello Delilah. There's a group from BXDC Internationals, who said that they have a meeting with you in around 15 minutes time?" the receptionist asked on the phone.

Delilah quickly straightened up in her seat, fumbling to rearrange her clothing and said, "Oh shoot! I mean, yes, yes! Please bring them in to the meeting room. I will be there shortly!"

After hanging up the phone, she stood up, running a hand through her hair in frustration. "Ugh, how could I forget about this meeting?" she muttered to herself as she grabbed her phone, notebook and a pen.

Firah turned around on her seat, asking, "What about your appraisal?"

Delilah sighed as she hugged her notebook and pen to her chest. "Um, can you inform them that I'll be late or like, do someone else first before me?" She scratched her cheek in thought. "Though, I'm pretty sure that Howard knows about my meeting so it should be fine."

Firah groaned. "Then they definitely appraise me first!" she whined.

Delilah mouthed 'sorry' as she rushed over to the lift that will bring her to the floor where the meeting room is.

Before entering the room, Delilah knocked on the door and nodded her thank you to the receptionist who brought her guests in. She shook hands with the members of the BXDC Internationals and proceed with the meeting.

After a couple of hours of discussing about a possible training plan with the BXDC Internationals, they finally reached a decision. Instead of returning back to the office, Delilah went straight out of the building for lunch. Lunch time was over when the meeting finally ended.

The employees of the BXDC Internationals apologized for holding her up, and wanted to invite her for lunch. However, Delilah rejected their kind offer as she already had plans.

Yes, she has been eyeing that slice of chocolate crêpe cake from Sweet Delights café, a few blocks away from her office building.

Luckily, her supervisor gave her permission to have a late lunch. So, she had taken the opportunity to use the time to go over to the café and dine in.

The bell above the door rang as she opened the door. She immediately went to the counter and ordered her slice of cake, without looking over at the other pastries displayed in the display counters.

Delilah sat at one of the tables nearby as she waited for her cake to come. Other than the crêpe cake, she also ordered a hot chocolate and two chicken curry puff.

After few minutes, the waitress came over with Delilah's order and placed them in front of her.

Delilah's smile widened as she looked down at the dishes.

The chocolate crêpe cake, also known as the mille crêpe, is a cake that is made of layers of crêpe, stacked together and layered with frosting or other fillings. Delilah had ordered the chocolate crêpe cake, which is obviously made from chocolate batter and was layered with whipped chocolate mousse. The crêpe cake looked gorgeous, drizzled with chocolate sauce and frosted with icing sugar.

As Delilah sliced into the slice of cake, the soft thin and flat crêpe fell apart in her fork, with whipped chocolate mousse smeared all over the pastry. The mousse felt so smooth as Delilah spear the layers of the crêpe and slathered it with more mousse.

The crêpe didn't taste sweet when she ate it but rather, it has that more subtle egg flavor and has that lightness. With the whipped chocolate mousse on the crêpe, it made the crêpe taste fluffier and chocolate-y.

Delilah loved how the crêpe melted in her mouth; the sweet chocolate burst into flavours as she munched on it. The taste of the fluffy yet rich milk chocolate exploded wonderfully in her mouth, stimulating her taste buds more. The smoothness and the coolness of the cake sent a light tingle down her spine.

Once she was done with the crêpe cake, she picked one of the curry puffs. The flaky yet thin crust broken into smaller pieces after she took a bite, filling her mouth with flavors of curry and spices. The flaky crust melt in her mouth as she savoured the taste of the delicious piquant fillings.

Delilah put her hand over her mouth, closing her eyes in bliss. 'Everything here is so DEE-licious! So glad that I came by before my appraisal,' she thought to herself, as she finished off her curry puff.

A few minutes after she finished her hot chocolate, crêpe cake and curry puffs, Delilah paid her bill and went out of the café. She immediately went straight to the office where Firah caught her at the entrance.

Firah quickly told Delilah that their supervisors would like to meet with her after she had finished her lunch.

Delilah nodded and went to one of the offices, where the appraisal meeting was held.

It was nearly the end of their working hours when Delilah finally got out of the room. She thanked her supervisors for their time and comments.

She immediately packed her things and was about to leave the office when Firah caught her again.

"So, how was it?" Firah asked.

Delilah smiled. "It was fine. Luckily, my performance had been so good, they might be giving me an opportunity to be promoted."

Firah gushed. "That's great, Delilah!"

Delilah tilted her head in question. "What about you?"

Firah shrugged. "Well, other than I need to take more initiative, all is good." She then chuckled. "Seems like you got this covered up, Delilah! Seeing you can even eat dessert before the appraisal!"

Delilah giggled. "Sometimes, it is best to eat DEE-ssert first, because you can never know what will happen soon!" she said, smiling.
