Maisy continued to stare forward, appearing as innocent as she could. The awkwardness settled between the two until someone opened and came through the front door, breaking the silence.

Jay removed his jacket and hung it on the coat rack. It was then he noticed Katie sitting on the couch, and his eyebrow tilted in curiosity. Weren’t the two like oil and water when he last saw them? He wondered the occasion that had led them to this peaceful encounter.

Katie pulled her sleeves down slightly to reveal much of her cleavage before she got up and headed towards Jay at the entrance. The corner of her lips tweaked upward into a smile. “It must’ve been a hectic day, Mr. Hamilton. Why don’t I give you a little rub on your shoulders?”

He leaned quickly to the side and dodged her hand, which failed to settle on his shoulder. So she lost her balance, stumbled forward, and fell to the ground.

She had picked out a figure-hugging dress for today, but now, the ripping sound of the material cutting through the air would suggest her decision wasn’t as clever as she had thought.

Frustrated, Katie pounded her fists onto the ground in rage. Why wouldn’t Jay see her instead of Maisy, the lowlife? It should have been her because their parental background was similar, equally matching. Just why did he pick her?

“Trash is piling up in the house.” Jay took a slow stride until he reached Maisy’s side, whispering in her ear, “I’m not pleased. You’ve been a bad girl, Maisy.”

Her puzzling eyes stared into his, unable to grasp the context in his words.

And when Katie heard his ridicule, humiliation flooded through her in an acid wash. She wrapped her coat around her waist before escaping through the door.

Jay reached for her back, and his hand started roaming over her body. But Maisy felt uncomfortable, deftly inching away from him. “I bet you haven’t had anything yet. I’ll get you some food.” Her instinct

steered her to get to her feet, her intuition telling her that him calling her a “bad girl” was a big red flag. She needed to get away from him that instant.

He saw through her excuse, of course, and he grabbed her wrist before she could bolt. Next, he pulled her into his embrace, pressing his thumb to her red lips. Before she could say a word, he interrupted her speech by slipping the same finger into her warm, moist mouth. “A bad girl needs to be punished,” he said with a grin.

His stuffed thumb dancing in her mouth left her red in the face, breathless. The more she had wanted to break free, the more he closed in on her, pressing his body against hers. She was the condemned prisoner, waiting for her execution. A lamb waiting to be slaughtered.

The second he finished his toying, he finally let go.

Maisy ran off to the kitchen to grab plates and cutleries, and she returned to the table. She sat across him, avoiding his smiling eyes by looking at her plate.

She popped a steak into her mouth, but the smell and taste of the bloody, red meat made her stomach flip. She threw up, stomach acid bursting through her mouth repeatedly at the sight of the steak.

Jay patted her back gently until she finished puking, and then he handed her a wet wipe. Since the housekeeper had already got off work, someone among them had to clear out the mess, doing the dirty work.

“I’m sorry. I’ll clean this up,” Maisy said nervously.

But Jay had already picked her up, cradling her to the soft, fluffy couch, and placed her there. “Stay put. I’ll take care of this. I’ve already texted Dr. Stevens, and he’ll drop by in a minute.”

When she tried to get up, he pressed her back gently, giving her a warning stare. She gave in, lying on the couch as she watched the man with a high status in the upper-class society handle her vomit. She didn’t realize she had zoned out. He was good-looking and poised even when his attention was on doing house chores. His side profile was flawless, his nose tall and straight, his jawline sharp.

The thoughts continued to race in her head, her heart thumping at an increasing pace. It was the ringing doorbell that had pulled her back from imagination to reality. Dr. Stevens was here, and after checking up on her, he delivered good news.

Maisy was pregnant.
