Chapter 316: Not Quite A Dragon

[Bonus Chapter 5/5]

After securing her home, Kana grabbed a precooked bird monster and draped it over her shoulder as she walked off towards a cliffside she had spotted from her treehouse. Her goal this time was to find some ore. She wanted to first try to forge a hammer and then try to forge a sword. If she can do all this with just her fire breath, then she could take the next few months and work on her forging.

Kana was quick as she ran through the forest. No monsters tried to attack her as they instinctively feared her. Because she had nothing to slow her down, Kana reached the cliffside in three hours. "Not, let's see… Oh? A cave?"

In the surveillance room, both Senior Miyu and Instructor Shelly were sweating buckets. "It's over! She had to go to that side of the forest! Why!?"

"Relax, Shelly, it might not be as bad as you think. You have to remember that girl can spit fire and knock down trees by flicking it with her finger." Senior Miyu was trying to look at the positive side of things.

"But she barely wins against those birds!" This was Instructor Shelly's main cause of concern, and she had every right to be concerned from an outside point of view. This is all because the only monster Kana had fought with so far was the cat she instantly killed and the birds who attacked her while she was sleeping. And thus, being rudely awakened, Kana would not be in her right mind, and her actions would seem as if she was struggling to fight the birds.

"Shelly, you are not looking at the bigger picture here. All those birds pecking her and clawing her, yet not a single one drew blood. They had shredded her clothes, causing her to have to make her own, but they never once left a single wound on her body. Why she was fighting the way she was when I know she can fight well is beyond me, though. Maybe for fun? "

"This… Really?" Instructor Shelly was having a hard time believing it, but everything Senior Miyu said just now was true!

"I… Let's just hope it all works out..." Instructor Shelly could only keep her eyes glued to the screen and hope everything worked out well. Senior Miyu looked at Instruct Shelly and sighed. She wondered if this girl was really cut out to be an assassin.

Back on Kana's side, she waltzed right into the cave without even caring if something was inside. But she only got two steps when she heard a snort and a puff of flames shot at her. "Oh?" Kana felt this was highly amused that something actually tried to kill her with flames. She waved her hand, causing the flames to disperse around her as she walked forward. "I did not think there was a monster on this world that could shoot flames."

"And I did not know there was a being on this world who could easily disperse my flames." A voice rumbled throughout the cave. Kana saw two red eyes staring back at her.

"So you can talk? What kind of a monster are you?" Kana asked as she continued forward. She could clearly see in the cave so she could see what the monster was.

"Can you not tell!? I am a majestic dragon!" The monster said proudly, acting smug as if his words were law.

"Pfft!? A dragon! You say!? You're not more than an overgrown lizard with wings. Look at you!" Kana was in hysterics. The so called self proclaimed dragon was big, scaly, had wings and a long tail but looked no different from an overgrown lizard with a few extra attachments.

"You! How dare you say such things!" The dra-overgrown lizard roared as it spat more flames at Kana.

Kana once again slapped the flames away and walked right over to the overgrown lizard, and smacked it on its nose. "Not bad!"

"You! Are you trea… Ouch! Damn it, stop hitting! Fine, I will stop, damn ouch!" Kana kept smacking the overgrown lizard on the nose until it finally submitted.

"Mmm, much better. Hey Lizzy, how are you able to talk?" Kana asked as she began looking around the cave.

"I don't know. I heard you humans speaking one day and decided to try it. Wait, Lizzy!?" Lizzy suddenly roared. It took a few seconds before it sank in that Kana had suddenly named it.

"Mmm…. Lizzy, the name fits you perfectly since you are not quite a dragon. Well… nope, not even close..." Kana replied.

"This… Anyway, what did you come here for? " Lizzy was secretly happy to suddenly have a name.

"Oh! Right, I am here for metal ore. Have you seen any?" Kana asked. She had picked up a few rocks already, but they were just stones.

"Hmm… A bit further in, I did see something that was different from the rocks lying around here that might be what you are looking for." Lizzy replied.

"Thanks!" Kana ran deeper into the cave, and just as Lizzy had said, there were actually some metal ores sticking out of the rock face. Kana pulled her fist back and punched the cave wall over and over, causing the whole place to shake violently.

Lizzy covered its head with its large paws as the cave shook. "It's good that I did not get too full of myself and try to fight that monster."

Kana beat on the wall for almost an hour, causing many clumps of metal ore to scatter all over. When she saw that she had a good haul, she stopped what she was doing and walked towards the entrance of the cave. She looked around outside for a second before turning to look over at Lizzy, who still had its claws covering its eyes, and nodded her head.

Sometime later, Lizzy, who had fallen asleep at some point, woke up feeling like something was off. It felt something heavy on its back. "This should do it. Now then… Lizzy, come on, we are  going back to my little home."

"Huh? Wait, what is on my back!? What the hell do I look like to you!?" Lizzy roared. On its back were a few logs tied on with vines creating a makeshift basket that was now filled with ores.

Kana stared blankly at Lizzy as she said: "My pet lizard?"
