Chapter 187: Trial Of Survival Part Five

"I don't get it. Why would having a few different abnormalities cause you to be considered lower class, as you said before?" Kana was confused on this point. The circuit merging was their only way of survival. Why would such a thing cause others to look down on her just because she was hit with side effects?

"Well, the Jokasins Empire sees those with abnormalities as unclean. Luckily the Commander is not one of those who looks down on us for having such abnormalities. The higher ups only want the Jokasins to be perfect in every way. If they show signs of having more than one race in them, then they are condemned to be lower class for the rest of their life. Some people will have more than just scales. As our race had evolved from ancient insects that evolved over millions of years and even out lived the other sentient races that lived in this world, we became the dominant species. It was during the virus that the other species died out. But ever since we began circuit merging, some of us have taken on traits of the other races. As for you, you seem to be someone from the old races. Why you are still alive is a miracle. This is one of the reasons why our commander has probably given you special treatment." Mary explained, but at the end, she covered her mouth as if she had said too much.

Kana caught on to this right away. "Special treatment? You mean to say that if I was like you guys, I would have been stuffed back into that cell?" It was now that Kana realized that she needed to leave here as soon as possible.

Mary was at a loss for words she had truly said too much. But seeing how she had already said it, she pushed Kana into her room and closed the door. "Don't speak too loud. This room has many surveillance devices. No cameras but microphones."

Kana was quite stunned at Mary's sudden change in attitude and even telling her about the surveillance. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I do not wish for you who seems to have nothing to do with our kind to be used as some kind of lab rat. You were found outside where the virus is rampant in the air, and yet you are perfectly fine. I am sure they wish to cut you up and find out why this is so. I, unfortunately, have no way of helping you. But I can at least warn you. If you have the ability, it is better to try to leave here as soon as possible and also do not eat anything.  I will find a way to return your bag to you as well. Just give me a little time. This much I can do." Mary whispered before suddenly speaking normally again: "And this is the bathroom over here. Dinner will be served in a short while. I will bring it to you."

"Understood." Kana understood what Mary was doing, but she wondered why Mary was doing it. She knew by Mary helping her in any way, it would be dangerous to Mary. She did not know if Mary felt bad for her because she was in a situation she could not get out of easily or what. One thing Kana knew was that no matter what, she would need to leave this place as soon as possible. She also needed to get her belongings back. As for the virus thing that kills the people of this world, she did not seem to be affected by it in the slightest. At least for now anyway. And if she was infected and it did do something to her, then that would be that. She would have no choice but to deal with the situation when that time came. But for now, she did not feel sick at all.

"Aoi, can you detect anything in this room?" Kana whispered. She still could not detect any kind of magic at all.

"No. I do hear a buzzing sound coming from a few different places, though." Aoi whispered back.

"Show me." Aoi nodded and flew over to the small table and pointed to a spot on the table that did not look out of place, but if you looked close enough, you could see thin lines that made a square on top of it. Kana used her nails and pied it open to see a small electronic device inside the table. Aoi pointed out five more places, and each place had a small device inside.  It was pretty easy to see what was powering the device since each one had a small blue, glowing crystal inside where the wires connected. Using her sharp nails, and sliced the wires and pulled the blue crystal out, and pocketed them. She figured she could bring them back to the academy to have them tested. After which, she sealed the spots back up and sat down on the bed. "Now we wait..."

In the office where Commander Branson was, another young man stood there in front of his desk. "Sir Mary seems to be acting strangely."

"Let her be for now. See what she does. Unless she does something against the military law, we can not do anything. Tell Shentia that if she wants better treatment, to report anything that goes on with this Kana. The higher ups have taken a great interest in her. But it will be a few days before they can send a unit out to retrieve her, so for now, in order to keep things low key, we can not make any moves that will make Kana want to escape or take her own life. The higher ups said she must be alive and well." Commander Branson explained, then waved his hand at the young man. "Go do what I told you to do."

"Sir, yes, sir!" The young man saluted before leaving the office. Commander Branson sighed and looked at this paperwork. "One life that may hold the key to save many is worth it..."

Mary was currently walking towards the storage area where Kana's things were taken. She walked up as normal to the counter that had an old man in military uniform sitting behind it. "What are you here for?"

"I am here to check on the newcomers. She asked me to check through her list to make sure it is all there." Mary replied.

"Mmm… Remember, nothing can be taken out." The old man said before buzzing her in. Mary nodded and walked through the metal barred door. Once she was out of sight, the old man picked up a small object next to him and pressed a button. "Commander, Mary came to check on the prisoner's belongings."

"It's fine. As long as nothing is removed, then she can do as she pleases."
