124 A Bedtime Story

Qiao Jing was sitting next to Qiao Yue, reading a book, when Qiao Yue expressed her desire to stretch her legs.

Qiao Jing glanced at Qiao Yue, echoing, “Exercise?”

“I’m not talking about going for a walk or anything. I’m talking about this,” Qiao Yue said as she posed like a game character.

“No. You either study or go to sleep. Pick one.” Qiao Jing immediately shot her request down.

Qiao Yue lay on the bed in utter despair. Did she have no other choice?

Qiao Yue eyed the book Qiao Jing was reading. While her brother was occupied, maybe she could play with her phone. Quietly, she snuck towards her phone, but it vanished as soon as she touched it.

She looked up and saw Qiao Jing smiling at her faintly.

“Brother, I was just going to play for a while,” Qiao Yue said gloomily. She even used her feminine charm to try and get her way.

“No,” Qiao Jing replied indifferently.

“I can’t sleep. I don’t want to study.”

Since her feminine wiles had no effect, Qiao Yue resorted to pouting.

Qiao Jing looked at her from the corner of his eye and caught her peeking at him. He could not help but smile. “Is something the matter? Do you need me to coax you to sleep?”

Qiao Yue continued to act shamelessly. “Brother, if you want to coax me, that’s fine too. Don’t people read storybooks to coax their children to sleep? Please read me a bedtime story.” None of her usual methods was working, so Qiao Yue did not bother to continue saving face.

Qiao Jing’s smile widened. “Fine. I’ll coax you to sleep.”

Qiao Yue’s eyes widened as she watched Qiao Jing turn to the first page of his book.

“Psychology. It is the scientific study of the behaviour and mental processes of individuals. The scientific method consists of an ordered set of steps for analysing and solving problems using objectively collected information as a factual basis for drawing conclusions…”

Qiao Yue was rendered speechless by Qiao Jing’s dry recital. Qiao Jing ignored her and continued reading.

The soft, slow drone of Qiao Jing’s voice filled the room. Soon, her eyelids fluttered, and she sank into sleep.

Qiao Jing put down his book when the sound of even breaths was all he heard outside his voice. Complicated emotions filled his eyes once again.

After what seemed like an age, Qiao Jing got up and turned off the lights, leaving only a small lamp far away from the bed to light up the room. With light steps, Qiao Jing exited the room to meet his assistant, who had been waiting outside for a while.

“Master Jing, Country A has relaxed its foreign investment policies. You can acquire several companies you like at any time.”

Although Qiao Jing’s assistant appeared calm, the excitement in his voice could not be disguised.

The project had been in the works for over half a month, and they finally had an opportunity to acquire the businesses which would give them a foothold in the foreign market. Qiao Jing’s assistant was so surprised by this change that he worried it was a trap.

Qiao Jing knew what was on his assistant’s mind and assuaged his doubts, saying, “It’s fine.”

Whether or not it was a trap, he still had to take the leap and embrace come what may. It was the first step in his plan to expand his business abroad, and he had to seize the opportunity.

“Is Miss Yue asleep?” His assistant asked as he glanced at the door.

“Yes, she is asleep.”

A gentleness surfaced in Qiao Jing upon mentioning Qiao Yue, which surprised his assistant.

Over the years, he had seen Master Jing surrounded by women, some of whom were well-matched in status, while others sought to reach for the sky through a positive relationship with him. Those women had dozens of means, and Master Jing had seen most of what they had to offer. Who could have known the stubborn Master Jing of yonder years would fall at his sister’s hands?

Those women could not compare with Miss Yue. She was the first to receive such special treatment from Master Jing.

He opened his mouth and was about to say something, but he stopped himself. Qiao Jing’s assistant had wanted to ask what his boss thought of Miss Yue but decided against it when he saw his boss’s expression.

Although they were siblings, they weren’t blood-related. Then again, the assistant could not see the Old Master agreeing to a marriage either way!

“What are you looking at?” Qiao Jing frowned at his assistant, who stared at him bug-eyed and hesitant.

Qiao Jing quickly composed himself, returning to his normal state as if the earlier gentility he exuded had been a lie. Qiao Jing’s assistant felt his heart tremble at the sudden change in tone, but he did not allow his inner turmoil to reflect on his outward expression or treatment of Qiao Jing.
