115 The Hero Saves the Beauty?

Qiao Yue woke a day later. The glaring sun shone in her eyes, and she raised her hand to block it. In doing so, she noticed a man sleeping on a chair.

“Brother,” Qiao Yue called out in a hoarse voice.

Qiao Jing’s ears twitched, and he slowly opened his eyes, twin pools of darkness that zeroed in on Qiao Yue.

Qiao Yue shifted guiltily under his gaze. “Brother, what’s wrong?”

“So you still know I’m your brother, do you?” Qiao Jing murmured emotionlessly, sending goosebumps along Qiao Yue’s skin.

Qiao Yue swallowed, asking hesitantly, “Brother, are you angry?”

Qiao Jing laughed. It was a humourless sound betraying his fury, which was beyond creepy.

“To be young and full of vigour… Once again, the hero saves the beauty,” Qiao Jing spat out coldly.

Qiao Yue choked on her words, her expression turning bitter, “It was an emergency! Brother, please don’t be angry.”

“What was so urgent you needed to pay half of your life to accomplish?” Qiao Jing rebuked, his tone growing colder.

“Half my life?” Qiao Yue did not understand. She was injured, but her injury was not serious!

“One of your ribs broke and nearly pierced your lungs. Qiao Yue, you’re amazing. Even now, you pretend your injury isn’t serious.”

Qiao Yue’s expression changed. Although she felt some pain, she did not expect it to be more serious than she first thought.

Qiao Jing got up and walked over to Qiao Yue. His tall figure reflected in Qiao Yue’s eyes. Qiao Yue was not used to being looked down on like this, so she turned away, but it was for nought. Qiao Jing sat next to her and looked her in the eye.

“Qiao Yue, why do you always put yourself in so much danger? What else are you hiding?”

Qiao Jing had cupped her chin as he spoke, preventing her from looking away. She was forced to stare into those deep obsidian pools that seemed to draw her hither. The longer she looked, the more she saw the worry hidden behind the mask of anger.

Qiao Yue was silent for a moment before she said, “Yesterday, that girl followed Fourth Brother and me out. I couldn’t pretend as if I had not seen her being tied up. Since it was an emergency, Fourth Brother and I chased her captors on our motorcycle; we did not even have the time to phone anyone or put our helmets on. If we had tarried, we would have lost her.”

“You could have called the police or returned to inform me, but you still chose the most dangerous option.” Qiao Jing could not accept Qiao Yue’s explanation.

“We weren’t familiar with the area and didn’t want our call to be intercepted before it reached the police.”

Qiao Yue wanted to say that it was a good thing they had not wasted much time. Otherwise, the girl could have been hurt worst. But Qiao Yue knew Qiao Jing’s personality too well. He would not bat an eye if someone died before him, more so if it were someone unrelated. Qiao Jing would not understand why she did what she did.

Just as Qiao Jing was about to say something, Qiao Yue grabbed his hand.

Qiao Jing froze, forgetting what he had wanted to say because of Qiao Yue’s sudden action.

“Brother, it hurts,” Qiao Yue said softly.

Qiao Jing stiffened. Even though he knew Qiao Yue was trying to change the topic, worry overcame all else. “I-I’ll go get the doctor,” he said.

Before Qiao Yue could respond, Qiao Jing had already left the ward, leaving her pointing at the call bell in a silly caricature of life.

Qiao Yue could not help but smile as the sight of Qiao Jing’s blank expression replayed in her mind.

Qiao Jing was worried about her. Lying on the bed, Qiao Yue went over what Qiao Jing had said. She did not feel much, not even when he said her ribs were broken. Did it slip her mind? Or was she just numb to the pain? Could that explain why she had thought her injuries were not serious? Qiao Yue was unsure.

Qiao Jing soon returned with a doctor in tow. Coincidentally, it was Zhou Lan.

“Qiao Yue says she is in pain. Please have a look at her,” Qiao Jing said.

Zhou Lan raised an eyebrow as she surreptitiously sent Qiao Yue a questioning look. She said to Qiao Jing, “Mr Qiao, please excuse us for a moment.”

Qiao Jing frowned but acquiesced, stepping out of the ward.

Only Qiao Yue and Zhou Lan remained. Zhou Lan broke the silence, teasing, “My, my. It’s quite a surprise seeing you here again, Miss Qiao.”

Qiao Yue sighed helplessly. “Of course, I’d have to visit. You are attached to this hospital, after all.”

Zhou Lan’s retort was swift and merciless. “Ouch! I don’t want to see you so often, you know?”

“But since you’ve gone to such lengths to meet me, I suppose I’ll join you for lunch some other time.”

Qiao Yue went with the flow, saying, “I’ll hold you to it, then.”

Zhou Lan snorted and quickly checked Qiao Yue’s condition.
