Chapter 137 – An ugly baby (1)

Most babies wouldn’t look too nice when they were just born, only a very small number of newborns would come out as fair-skinned, chubby little dumplings. Most babies would look like the one that Ye Zhen was seeing: purplish red or dark red skin, a flat face, and wrinkled skin like a little old person.

Ye Zhen glanced at Lu Beichuan’s handsome and strong facial features, then she looked at her fair-skinned wrist. She touched her face to check for her defined facial features. She almost couldn’t believe that the baby in front of her with his purplish red skin and wrinkled skin was the son that she had arduously given birth to.

In her world view, newborn babies should be fair-skinned and chubby with a pair of beautiful big eyes.

Why had she given birth to such an ugly baby?

The discrepancy between reality and imagination was too big, so it was difficult for Ye Zhen to accept. Thus, she had burst into tears when she saw the baby.

Ye Zhen’s sudden cry alarmed everyone in the hospital room.

“Zhenzhen, are you feeling unwell somewhere?”

Ever alert, Lu Beichuan stood up and headed out. “I’ll go call the doctor over.”

Ye Zhen hastily stopped him. “I’m fine.”

“Why are you crying then?”

Ye Zhen tried to hold back her tears. “I gave birth to an ugly baby…”

When Mother Lu heard that, she laughed. “Is that why? I thought it was something serious. It’s okay. It’s your first time being a mom, so you don’t have any experience. All babies look like this when they’re newborn. He’ll look better in time. The baby won’t look like this forever. He’ll look better and better.”

“Really?”

“Would mom lie to you? When I gave birth to Beichuan, he looked like this too at first. His skin was wrinkled all over, and his head was elongated. He looked just like a little monkey. But look at how handsome Beichuan is now.”

Lu Beichuan’s expression was stiff, and he stubbornly didn’t chime in with his mom’s attempt to comfort Ye Zhen.

Perhaps, there was a link between mother and child. The baby had been quietly lying in Mother Lu’s arms, but when he heard his mother crying, he scrunched up his eyes and bawled.

His piercing cries sounded as if they could resonate to the sky.

Mother Lu furrowed her brows in distress. Gently holding the baby, she tried to coax him. However, the baby had been asleep for most of the day and had recovered his energy. Even though Mother Lu coaxed him for a long time, she couldn’t get him to stop crying.

Seeing that baby’s face was flushed red from crying, as the grandmother, she felt her heart aching. “Zhenzhen ah, how about you hold the baby?”

Ye Zhen was caught off guard. When the small baby was presented to her, she was once again shocked by how small the baby was as he laid curled up in the swaddling clothes. Clearly, the baby was of a certain size, but why did he seem so small in comparison to her?

Ye Zhen carefully held the baby. Supporting the baby’s soft, little head in her palm, she copied how Mother Lu had tried to coax the crying baby.

Strangely, the baby that had been bawling in Mother Lu’s arms immediately stopped once he was deposited into Ye Zhen’s arms.

The baby hadn’t even opened his eyes yet, but he giggled and gurgled at Ye Zhen.

Ye Zhen’s heart melted into goo. She stretched out a forefinger to touch the baby’s clenched fist. It was such a soft hand. It felt as if even the bones in his hand were soft too. She didn’t dare to use too much strength in fear that she would hurt this fragile baby. She only gently tapped the back of the baby’s hand.

“Sure enough, the baby likes his mom the best. The little fellow stopped crying as soon as you were the one holding him.”

The little fellow in her arms kept giggling and blowing out bubbles. He looked so silly with his closed eyes and big smile.

Ye Zhen couldn’t resist smiling too.

Ye Zhen found a transparent white jade tucked inside the baby’s swaddling clothes. The jade had been carved into the shape of a traditional protection charm: a circle with a hole in the center. The surface was smooth and perfect. When she held it in her palm, it felt warm.

“Dad specially found a famous master carver in Myanmar to carve this. It’s to ensure the baby’s safety and well-being.”

The jade was transparent and flawless, and the carving was meticulously done. Ye Zhen didn’t know much about jade, but she knew that the value of any gift from Old Master Lu would be very high.

“Where’s grandpa?”
