Chapter 70

Marie suffered from a fever. Ellie, startled by her sister’s raised temperature, squeezed a towel soaked in cold water and wiped her off.

“Sister…”

It was a careful hand not to strain the wound. The doctor made a decoction of a medicinal herb similar to an antipyretic and delivered it to Ellie. Since it was not easy to pass, she opened Marie’s mouth slightly and put it in little by little.

“I’ll do it. Ellie, wipe Marie.”

Brielle took the decoction from Ellie.

“Yes…”

The two children started working together to take care of Marie. Neither of them could say what if she didn’t make it through this night.

Meanwhile, Barry was away to write a letter to Kentrail.

“Marie, take one bite, please.”

What Marie had always said to him, the child was now doing it.

“Huh? If you can hear me, please…”

For the struggling Brielle, the maid grabbed Marie’s face and opened her mouth, “Young Master, pour it in like you’re spilling it. She can’t swallow it right now.”

“Yes…”

Tears welled up again from Brielle’s eyes as he, who couldn’t do anything, gazed at Marie. When he cried like this, she, who had always comforted him as soon as possible, stayed still, he began to cry out of breath.

“Young Master…”

The maid chief feared that Brielle might be dehydrated, so she said she would go get some water and disappear.

“Young Master, stop it. My sister will get up.”

Ellie spoke in a firm tone.

“Yes. Of course.”

At that, Brielle wiped his face with his sleeve and blew his nose with the handkerchief near him.

“Ellie, do you know who it is? Who is targeting us now?”

Ellie, who was wiping her older sister, stopped for a moment at his words.

“Young Master…”

Now, it occurred to her that he knew everything.

“I… kept thinking. My parents didn’t die in an accident, they were probably murdered. Are they trying to take Marie from me now?”

Well, Brielle was now old enough to think like that.

“Who is that? That person?”

“I don’t know that either. Neither the sister nor the Count knows. They’re all looking for the culprit.”

“Is that why uncle is out of the mansion now?”

“Well. I didn’t hear exactly, but… I guess so.”

“…Is uncle okay?”

“Yes. Who in the world would seek the chancellor of this country?”

“That’s a relief—”

The two children continued to do what they were doing so as not to have any more bad thoughts.

***

Bang-bang.

The sound of something breaking filled the castle space.

“Master, let me.”

“No. Back off.”

Continuing with the axe, Kentrail slammed the door of the safe. The safe, which had already been blown a third, was in tatters.

“What the hell is this…”

Other vassals belatedly ran towards the place.

“Chancellor!”

And they shouted at Kentrail who was swinging his axe.

“You all came back well.”

As he turned, his eyes staring at them were so cold, they took a step back without realizing it. Kentrail opened his mouth again.

“Catch them and put them in jail.”

“What are you doing? This is Peron, not the capital! The Chancellor has no reason to arrest us.”

“Why? You mean you don’t know that now?”

“What… is that…”

“Is it a good thing that you are hiding the Head’s death? The funeral is not held on time, so the body is decomposing and rotting?!”

At that, they looked at each other, wondering how he knew it. They sharpened their teeth on an invisible person. They were anxious that he would meet the Chancellor yesterday, though it seemed that he hit the back of their head in this way.

“I don’t know what he said…”

“You were hiding everything that Brielle had an aunt.”

“It’s the Head!”

“So, there’s nothing wrong with you guys? We’ll find out when we investigate. If you’re unhappy, you can cooperate with the investigation. Isn’t it? Take them all.”

They screamed and searched for the knight, but no one came. This was because he had already led them properly.

Kentrail, who turned his head away from the dragged ones, continued his axing again.

***

“Young Master, a guest has arrived.”

A guest came at a time like this… Thinking that, Brielle’s forehead was filled with wrinkles appearing and disappearing.

“Who?”

“It’s Baron Jake.”

“Jaden’s father?”

“Yes.”

When Ellie said she was sure she could take care of it here and told him to get out, the child reluctantly went to the parlor.

“Brielle.”

“Hello?”

“Yes, I’ve heard of what happened here in the evening. That’s why I took the liberty to come here tonight.”

When he turned his head, a knight of the family stood there. That knight must have been talking to Baron Jake.

“You don’t have to look at me like that. It’s not that he was ignoring you, it’s that Kentrail has already ordered him to let me know if anything happens.”

“Yes.”

Hearing that, Brielle turned and looked at Jake.

“But, it seems that Kentrail’s worries were in vain. Looking at you now.”

Seeing that the gaze on the knight was unusual, Brielle was already ready to become the family’s Head.

“How’s the nanny?”

However, his eyes fluttered at the word ‘nanny’ that was mentioned, and his voice faded slightly.

“She will definitely wake up.”

“Yes, of course. I was going to stay here until your uncle comes back, but there’s no need for that. I’ll go back. Although if you have any difficulties, come see me. Okay?”

“Thank you.”

Jake turned around and thought for a moment whether his son had grown as much as Briel.

***

“Huh? Young Master, why are you back so soon?”

“He’s already gone.”

“Yes…? He was suddenly coming to visit tonight?”

“My uncle must have asked him to come once in case something happened to the family.”

“Ah…”

“Huh… Where did uncle go that he left after making such a request?”

“I think I know. He said he was going to the Young Master’s maternal grandfather’s house, didn’t he?”

“Yes.”

After those words, there was silence. The children didn’t have dinner, so they had no energy.

“Does Sir Taylor or Derek know?”

“Well…”

“Brother said he’d send a letter, so he’ll be back soon. Let’s do our best a little bit more.”

Even though she was saying that to him, she was also speaking to herself. She wished the Count would come back and watch over this place. And, she hoped that he would share his energy with her sister so that she could wake up.

***

Finally, the door to the safe was torn off, Kentrail dismissed the knights and took out a letter from the sender, Andalson. The splendid handwriting seemed contradictory to the writing from someone without the last name like a commoner.

He opened the letter that appeared to be the oldest.

There were writings written by Brielle’s aunt, as he expected.

[ To father,

I arrived here well. So, don’t worry.

It’s a pity that I didn’t see the child’s wedding, but that’s unavoidable so will the child understand?

It’s very cold here, unlike in the South. It’s a place father would object to. But… ]

There was handwriting that closely resembled his sister-in-law’s handwriting. Now, he knew who the culprit who changed the letter was.

‘No way…’

It seemed that the death of his brother and sister-in-law and the death of his parents had nothing to do with each other.

Kentrail hurriedly opened the letter about the time his sister-in-law died.

[ To father.

I had just heard that the child was dead. It’s really deplorable that such an accident happened by chance.

I feel very sorry for that child. Maybe, I’ll spend the rest of my life feeling guilty in the bondage of a twin. Father, maybe you won’t be able to forgive me either…

Oh, don’t worry too much. It’s not a big deal, it’s just a thought because we were both candidates for a bride there… ]

“Ha….”

The words guilt and forgiveness made Kentrail angry.

Was she such a shameless person…?

He unknowingly hit the desk. The thought filled his mind that he should hurry back to the mansion and send a knight to the North to capture Brielle’s aunt.

“Excuse me… Master.”

However, a knight from outside hurriedly entered the place where he was.

“What’s going on?”

“I got a letter from the mansion.”

“A letter…?”

“Yes.

Kentrail hastily opened the letter. It was because anxiety grew out of control when he saw that the sender was Barry. In addition, he sent a rapid letter in which he had to use a magic stone. As he checked the contents and his heart felt like it was going to break.

He now knew what it meant when the world stopped.

There, it was written that Marie was injured and was unable to wake up.

“Hurry… Hurry, get the horse ready!”

“Yes.”

The knight saw the Master’s momentum and ran out. Kentrail hurriedly packed all the letters that had been left on the desk and ran out the gates before the knight could even prepare the horse. He didn’t even have time to look around.

“Master! What will the vassals do?”

Only then did the situation here come to mind when the knight who ran asked a question.

“I’ll send someone to watch over them.”

“Yes.”

With only a few knights, he hurried to the capital. His heart beated faster than his running horse.

‘Please, please hold on. I can’t live without you. You are now my world.”

***

Jaz was smiling in the dark.

Although she failed to kill Brielle, when he was told that the woman named the nanny, who had betrayed him, was in danger.

‘Look. If you disturb me, that’s what happened. I wish you could have died sooner if possible, but maybe she just got stabbed at a vital point?’

He made a sullen sound, who had gone crazy even without drinking.

“We’ll see. I will make everyone that way.”

The colorless and odorless drug would be a great weapon. His client would not be able to stop contacting him to obtain this drug.

‘I’m going to get rid of everyone on Siege’s side, one by one. By the way, I have something to avenge on the County. If that nanny had done her job perfectly, I would have certainly received support for the family succession from the client.’

He murmured again.

“So, it’s not my fault that my parents died…”

Securing the escape funds was easy, he thought everything was perfect.
